Hey all.

More problems with my 2006 FR.

Changed the oil yesterday (engine). Totally normal stuff.

Today - car breaks down with what felt like the gearbox seizing up. Almost as if the gearbox had lost its oil. Official diog not done yet. But:

Is there anyway i could've F'ed up while changing the oil? Can you drain gearbox oil by mistake!!?

They are 2 different drain plugs. I doubt whether you have drained the gearbox by mistake.
Firstly, if you had put 4.5 litres of oil in the engine without draining it first, you would have noticed when checking the dipstick whilst filling.
Secondly, with 9 litres of oil in the engine, when you ran it, oil would have been forcing it's way out of every orifice in the engine and there would be oil everywhere.
 
Yeah thats what i thought. No blue smoke etc.

About 8 months ago, i had major gearbox probs. Car was under warranty etc. They said there was a prob in the box which caused it to go band. Ironically this happened on the same stretch of road as today. And even more ironically - it happened about 4 days after i changed the oil. But before: a wining noise started to occur. Got louder and louder then the box gave up.

This time - the day after an oil change, the wining happened all of a sudden and the box went bang all within about 5 minutes.

Just seems too coincidental to me. Also the Gbox in it this time was brand new from the last incident.

How much oil does a gearbox hold? litres?

Also, where is the drain plug for the box?
 
The gearbox holds 2 litres of oil and I'm sure the deain plug is on the bottom and pretty easy to get to.
As you say strange coincidence.
 
Hmm. Now i'm nervously wondering if i did get it wrong. Anyone got a pic of the gearbox plug location?
 
Well the car is at my garage. So investigation has begun. I've got a horrible feeling i've screwed up and now am going to need a new box. AGAIN.
 
Which plug did you drain? And if you drained the gearbox your engine oil must be way over the max.
If its your error I feel for you mate.

This is the thing. I tipped in 4 litres of new oil. And as far as i'm aware, the oil level prior was not low. I had no blue smoke or over flow. . .. .. But you know that sick in the stomach feeling when you start to realise you maybe messed up.
 
And the plug you took out to drain was it a bolt head 19mm or was it a spline head or Allen key head?
Also how much oil came out? Over 4 litres for the engine and 2.3 litres for gearbox.

Sorry but are you talking engine or gearbox? Didn't think there was a dip stick for the gearbox.

We are talking engine oil as your correct the gearbox doesn't have a dipstick.
Just trying to workout if by accident he has drained the gearbox instead of the engine.
Waiting to find out if its some really bad luck or a booboo.

Well investigation is complete. It appears that (sorry i'm not technical) the duel mass flywheel has been eating into something and etc etc and so on and so forth. So on the motorway at that point, something had to give. Anyway. What's happened has happened. And the main result is: I didn't drain the box oil. But I now need a flywheel, clutch kit, and more severely- a new box. This is where you guys come in. Am I right in thinking a replacement box HAS to be from an FR? I believe a Tdi box has different ratio's etc. And following that, does anyone know the best place to find a 2nd hand box? I'm truely in the s*#t now, so would appreciate any help.

Is the car still under warranty? How many miles since the gearbox was swapped? Might be that something wasn't re-installed properly.
