I knew because you can't get more. once is full the oil starts to get out.

search on ebay, that's just a dumb image I found in the internet.

Well i said this in another post but thought would make sense posting here. I have done a video recording the gear box aka transmission, so if anyone just wants a look around, or if anyone can specifically show where the drain and fill bolts are, then this will remain for all to see. Ignore first bit talking about cv boots as i done the video for DM222 but then thought..whilst im here might aswell do transmission

Hey DM did you get this oil from the dealer? and how much did it set you back price wise?
I though it would be 12€ but that was without VAT, so I ended up paying 15€. So 45€

2L is enough = 30€

yes it was fom the dealer

1:10 fill
1:26 drain

VW/Seat recommends:

When filling with oil, note the following:
– Remove oil plug -arrow-.
– Fill with gear oil to lower edge of filler hole.
– Screw in plug -arrow-.
– Start engine, engage gear and allow gearbox to turn for approx. 2 minutes.
– Stop engine and remove plug -arrow-.
– Top up with gear oil to lower edge of filler hole.
– Tighten bolt -arrow- to specified torque → 30nm

-arrow- = fill bolt

the car must be plane when filling

I think one comment to make here is, no matter how easy it look to just remove the fill/level plug and stick your finger in to check the oil level, I'd suggest not trying that!

I know all about doing that, I only did it once and that was on a Ford Escort, it took quite a long time for me to calm down and get my finger back out!!

So, I got hold of a maybe 6 inch nail for wood, hacksawed off the pointed end, put it in a vise and bent the end, about 1/4" to 1/2" through a right angle, cut grooves on it to act as a scale, tied a length of string to it and tied the other end of the string to an old gearbox oil container cap, so that is what I use to gauge the level of oil in a gearbox now, just remove the fill/level plug on level ground, push that bent nail thing into the inside of the gearbox, rotate it while keeping it resting on the fill/level threaded hole, remove and check where the oil is on that simple gauge.

RUM4MO this one there is no problem. I did it :)

but your method is better because you can't sense the oil with a finger, at least I could not.

If I remember correctly that far back in time, you could only reach or get a finger into the fill/level hole in that Ford Escort by reaching in and down from the front of the under bonnet area, so not too easy to get my finger in and almost completely impossible to get it out! Never will I get caught out like that again - hopefully.

Hey rum that's a great idea for a guage. My question is, so u have in your bent nail and on it it has oil. Well how do u know what level it's meant to be, seen as u made it yourself? I mean ur oil dip stick have a min and.mark lines? So I'm struggling to see how you get oil level information from this as you don't know how how or not full it SHUD be in first plac????

it should be fully full, also check oil with car plane.

Remember, as dm222 has said already, the fill point is also the level point, so again as dm222 probably said, you can't really overfill it as the oil starts to run back out - if in doubt when that happens, stop adding more oil and wait until the oil stops draining back out of that fill/level point.

The oil level gauge that I made was intended for checking that the current oil level is okay in the gearbox, ie a check that I would carry out every 2 years - maybe. The groove I cut into the nail was set by me to be maybe 5mm or 10mm below the level of the fill plug - so if any oil made contact with that gauge, the oil level was considered to be okay, remember gearbox splash feed oil around, so as long as there is a reasonable amount of oil in there it will get picked up and thrown around the internals of the gearbox as intended.

With regards to this DM. Did you jack your car up onto all 4 axle stands to do this to be able to get under . As I have never put my car onto 4 axle stands and want to be sure of safety.

Or use four equal height short ramps - or two long ramps, remember the plan is to carry out these checks when the car is on dealer/general garage inspection ramps, us DIYers need to replicate that situation when carrying out fluid level checks.

Yeah defiantly. I did want some ramps but they are abit pricey for me tbh so I was hoping someone had jacked it onto all for axle stands. With that being said with regards to jacking up th back would it be safe to use the tow hook or the rear drive axle in the centre to jack up the back at the same time. My problem is when I usually jack up the car I use the designated points under the door sill but I want to place my axle stands there instead of my jack to lift the car. I have a arched some.pics of where I mean, I placed my jack arm lever on where I mean

That must be great to work with. Where is it that you get to do that? Do you have to pay for the service of the garage?

Hey DM can you tell me what size hex bit the transmission uses to undo drain and fill plug?

I didn't memorize.

I recommend watching some videos on youtube about changing VW transmission oil and maybe they will tell.

Thanks

Drain/fill plug are security M16 Spline. So they have a little pin sticking up in the middle so the tool has to have the hole in the middle to work.

Ebay £6.98 for 4356-BGS VAG drain plug tool M16 security spline 1/2" drive from Car tools direct;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4356-BGS-...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

I just used my finger.. plenty of room! I had it only jacked up at the front so it was a little over filled but not an issue - still have to go back and fix the driveshaft seal which is the reason for the leak = low oil and a rattle from the end bearing (fixed by correct oil level). I would say the oil has a finite life as the chopping action of the gears will cut the oil molecule chains up over time. I should really do mine but not decided on a source. I had some Redline 75W-80W to hand to fill it up and that is too spec.. just seems silly going to Opie for 2 litres that are expensive and not quite right spec so may yet go to the dealer.

Jacking at the ends of the beam axle is OK but in the middle is risking it!
