Gearbox ratios

So i've got a 94' Ibiza gti, but i'm finding the gear ratios a bit low for my liking. Great for motorway cruising, but acceleration is a bit bogged down. Anyone else find this? Is there any direct swaps with other gearboxes that have different ratios out there?

Kinda have half a thought of dropping a in a 16v/cupra engine at some point...

so you want longer or shorter gearing?

what rpm/mph do you get in 5th at the moment?

I am assuming you have an 8V ? if so it has an 020 gearbox of some code - the one to go for is an 020 '2Y' box from a 1.8 16V golf GTI, much better for acceleration, and if you put a 3.94 final drive in there (it comes with a 3.6) even better ! still good for 140mph but acceleration through the gears is fantastic, like gaining 30hp

I think the 100bhp 1.6's found in Cordoba's (and polo's) is 3.6FD as well (but not sure about the ratio's in between)

its the ratios inbetween thats the good bit with the 2Y

Its a high velocity ratio/ lower torque ratio (i thinks thta known as 'shorter gearing'?) that i'm after. i'm getting about 23 mph per 1000rpm in 5th at the moment. not really concerned about top speed too much.

Yes, its an 8v. Is the 3.96 final drive ratio used in any cars or is it an after market parts?

I take it that most gearboxes and enignes in these cars are interchangable, its just that part 2 of my plan is to fit a 16v enigne.

020 box 3.94 final drive is fitted to loads of different vag 020 boxes - you need to research which ones in places like etka and sites like:

none of them is totally ideal for the sporting driver, the best being a 2Y with its final drive replaced with a 3.94 from a different box - this would be a direct fit for an 8V ibiza

these boxes can be obtained from scrapyards and off the many vag forums like club gti, performance vw, edition 38 etc

the 020 is good for approx 200hp so is ok for a 16V conversion

well you will have to buy 2 gearboxes - anything from £50 to £150 apiece - then get them built into one - probably £150-200 - then fitted to your car, maybe another £100. And if your doing all this you may as well stick in a quaife lsd at £550.

SO...

In conclusion,

1.8 GTI 16v 020 y Box This has the 1st 4 gears

Then get a box from ........... (insert cars with the final gear, i couldnt figure out that website)

Get it put in. (Direct fit)

Add quafe limited slip diff because its t3h bomb...

nope - the 2Y box has all the gears (5), the differential crownwheel and pinion (the final drive) come from the other box

Are the boxes with the final drive needed, but how do i find out which vehicles have these boxes? As ill have to tell the scrap people what car i want the box from.
