Gearbox Swap

Hi Guys

I'm looking at getting an Ibiza Cupra TDi but i don't think it's long legged enough...

I know that the early fabia's gearbox allows for 2000rpm at 80mph in 6th.

Would it be a case of swapping the gearboxes? or will components need re-calibrating such as the speedo?

Cheers

Why would you want to change a perfectly good gearbox that the manufacturer felt was best for the job?

Do you think you know better than the professionals?

Or is there something I don't know?

BTW the early 130 sport Ibiza's had the same box and the ratio's were all to pot IMO, IIRC top speed was attained in 5th rather than 6th

Shouldn't have bought the Ibiza Cupra TDI then. Crap mpg

that said, how much are Gearboxes? £500 for a good one, plus 4hrs labour £160, plus gearbox oil ££, plus a new clutch (you might as well while you're there)

So I reckon you'll be a grand down the pan.

How much extra mpg will a longer FD give you, and how long will it take to recoup the £1k you 'invested'

Quite a long time is the answer, unless you do interstella distances.

Better off learning to drive a little smoother, check your tyre pressures more often & when your tyres need replacing get some more eco oriented ones.

wow, someone's a snapy chappy :|

I just like to be able to cruise at 70\80 and still have a nice low revving engine :)

Quiter, more economical, less overall revs on the engine, not on boost...

I'd get a used gearbox from a scrappy and sell mine... probably even make some money from it. New flywheel and clutch as the turbo is getting the hybrid treatment.

Just wanna know if its a swap job :)

Again I don't understand how in my 1.2 I'm getting 420... ish per tank, I cruise at 70/80 on the motorway and I'm on the motorway for 30miles per day, as well as stop start traffic and I use the air con! AND due to the "credit crunch" I'm using that limp wristed fairy liquid Tesco call unleaded! Am I just lucky in some way?

Changing the gearbox to me sounds like a little too much work for not much gain, out of interest what is the car idling at 70/80 at the moment?
