Going to try Polishing myself

not really, you can use a finishing pad to apply a wax... it wont do any harm.

start off with a finishing pad and the least abbrasive polish you have, maybe even AG SRP or DoDo Lime Prime as these have very light abbrasives and wont cut into the paint.

the machine you have (G220) is also a lot safer for a newbie than a rotary as the DA motion of the machine doesnt generate anywhere near the same levels of heat as a rotary does.

i have a G220 and have seen some very good results with it

You can see that the flat over spray and scratches have been removed. This was using a cutting pad and high cut menzerna polish then a finishing pad and DoDo LP to refine.

thanks

I was going to start off with:

1 x Meguiars 7" Polishing Pad
1 x Meguiars #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish

to get rid of or reduce the swirl marking

then:

1 x Meguiars 7" Finishing Pad
1 x Meguiars #80 Speed Glaze

to finish off the paint:)

That is a good combination. Megs products got long working times so keep to 18x18" working areas and you will get much better level of correction.

thanks a lot.

secondly what speeds do you recommend for both phases?

Phase 1
I was going to start off with speed 2 to work in the cleaner polish. Once worked in, up to speed 4? working in till a transparent state is reached, and then wipe off?

I generally agree with fox. It all depends how the polish and your paint is reacting with the combo your using. Generally you can get a good level of correction from speed 4-5. I personally wouldn't even start with 83 on the car. I would start with 80 and a polishing pad..see what results you get with that.

sorry if this sounds like a thick question to you mate, but are the grades 80 and 83 the difference in grade/courseness of the liquid?

so you would suggest just using 80 speed glaze and a polishing pad and thats it?

erm lol, I suggest starting your own thread mate, as this topic is about something completely different

however to answer your question, the turtle black trim stuff brings it up very well

New thread mate... dont just jump in and ask your own questions on someone elses

Rule of thumb is to start with the least abbrasive polish and pad combo you have... the polishes usually have a cut grade on the bottle, i dont have Megs polishes so cant comment on them but the Menzerna ones i have show the level of cut each polish has. You start with the lowest level and either finishing or polishing pad. Complete a set on a section of the car and if you dont get the levels of correction you are looking for then you go up 1 level of cut and keep the same pad. Then if you get a result then your sorted... use that polish with that pad for the rest of the car. If not then try the light polish with a stronger (polishing or even curtting) pad, increase the level of polish cut if you need to etc etc.

There is a very good guide on polishing by DA (G220 etc) here:

Hve you had a chance to have a go at this after chatting the other night Tony?

no sorry mate

I got the call today from MP Tools as they have got my new work lights in (as they supplied the set I got with the wrong plug on) to see the swirl marks

I am picking this up on Friday, and with a bit of luck, I can start polishing on the 18th & 19th Feb before the RR as I have two days off

pictures to follow:)

ok I agree with that - is it the machine is cheap or the pads or not worth it as all cheap?

was looking to get a starter set to practice with - could use the cheaper pads on my caravan and horse box not for the car but is the machine is poor also then not worth it really

components in the motor would prob not last long

pads may be of a cheap quality......I could go on

basically what I am saying is dont scrimp on essential parts like this. You wouldnt scrimp on cheap oil or 2nd hand parts for a big service would you? the same applies to this

treat the paintwork the same as with your engine - with the upmost care:) (which I am sure you already do)
