Goodyear asymmetric 3 vs Michelin Pilot sport 4s

I guys i have a CUPRA 290 which is currently on conti's sport contact 5 which i haven't found to be a very good tyre particularly in the wet - i often experience traction issues and wheel hop.
I currently have 3mm on the fronts and 7mm on the rears. I have narrowed down my next tyre choice to be either the Goodyear asym 3's or the Michelin Pilot sport 4S. I have read reviews on both but i would like some comments about your experiences of them. At the moment Tyreleader are selling two Michelin Pilot sport 4S for £334 vs two Goodyear Assym 3's for £267

1. Which one out of the two would you advise me to buy based on your own experiences

2. Should i replace all 4 in one go even though i have 7mm on the rear of my conti 5's or would replacing the front two suffice?

Any help or advise would be much appreciate

Hi,

I had the PSS (so the predecessor to the 4S) and then the asym 3's on my old Focus RS.

Price wise the asym 3's are a bargain, they handled 400bhp and 400lb/ft of torque through the front really well, were good in the wet and even better in the dry. They were pretty much on par with the PSS imo and worked out at around £50 a corner cheaper. If I was doing it again I would go with the Goodyear's again in a heartbeat.

It will depend what kind of driving you do I guess, but for daily driving I think the asym 3's are all you are going to need. Granted the pilot sport 4S might move the game on even more but I cant comment on that unfortunately.

If it was me I would move the back conti's to the front, burn through them as quick as possible, then rotate again when the conti's go. I know people will argue against that but that's just what I would do.

Another vote for the Assymetric 3, I have them on my Cupra and find them to be great. I particularly like their performance in the wet.

I can't comment on the Michelin tyres, I have not tried them and probably wont as I like the F1's so much..... lol
 
Tested both tyres for a pretty long journey and I can tell you with both you won't regret.
But if I need to pick from those two,would go for Good Year AS3 they are really good in wet conditions like those 2 before me said in posts.
 
Thanks for the responses guys. Would it be safe to just replace the fronts for now given that i have 7mm on the rear conti 5's or would you advise me to replace all 4?

I think you are talking about the pilot 4 not the s completely different tyre and much better than good year as3 its at speed you can feel the difference I also have tried both tyres on the Cupra 280 at stage 1 and the ps4s is the best tyre out there for a front wheel drive car like ours
 
If you are going to drive your Cupra like it was meant for, MIch PSS or the replacement PS4S are the best, if you are only using it as a daily drive ALL the time, then you have bought the wrong car. Buying a Cupra and then not putting the best tyres on is just stupid and penny pinching.

I wouldn't call somebody stupid for wanting to save some money. It's not like he's saying it's between some Michelins and some Falkens. Assy 3's are decent tyres. You're right that the PS4's are the best though.

Thanks for the input however according to testing which can be found on tyrereviews.co.uk the Goodyear asymmetric 3 perform better in the wet than Michelin PSS. Hence why i have come here to get real world feedback

Read the recent Auto Express test the PSS's blew everything away and I have used mine right thru a Scottish winter with no probs.

you need the ps4,s not the ps4 or pss they are the best there is at this moment as I said before a much better tyre than the asymmetric 3 :D
 
Just taken the plunge with a pair of PS4s. I had PSS all round and they were great. But the PS4s has such great reviews I'd be kicking myself for not getting them.

Another vote for putting the new tyres on the rear and burning through the Contis on the front. I always put the new tyres on the rear anyway, gives them an easier run-in period too.

Must say I was tempted by the Assy3 though, but if you can afford the PS4s then it's the way to go.
 
I've ordered 2 Pilot super sports in 235/35/R19. At £140 each I couldn't really turn it down. PS4S seem to be in short supply and a fair bit more money.
