What do you guys prefer for navigation?
I settled on google maps over waze because of following:

1. refresh rate:
I took wrong exits several times because waze takes 1-3 seconds to update the location on maps. specially on roundabouts / multiple exits.

2. it doesn't stop talking:
there is a way to make it announce alerts only, however, when you let it speak, it doesn't stop talking, while google maps is soothing to ears

3. no lane assist:
big downside if driving in big and foreign cities.

4. not truly offline / use more data
uses double the mobile data than google maps, not really important, but it is true.

lets hear some good features of waze too:

1. gas prices:
Saves a few bucks, I search for the cheapest gas station using waze.

2. Cops and radars:
this one is very useful to prevent speeding tickets.

3. Reporting the closed roads
I was routed to a closed road while traveling across different towns once. I had to take a U turn and come back 4-5 miles. But I reported the closed roads, so nobody else fall for the fastest route trap.

Google maps for me, not sure why lol

I try to still use road signs so I'm still concentrating like people used to before sat navs haha but then I find out that the UK roads are so poor that I have to look out for pot holes more... My 19's don't like holes...

Tried waze for a week or 2 but it didn't grab me... Maybe I'm a Google weirdo..

If you're reporting a closed road in waze from the app, it will only show it on your map until another wazer goes down that road and also reports a closed road where it will then show for everyone but only a limited time (not days). You're better to report it as a 'map issue' and then an editor can have a look and edit it for everyone from the waze website :D

I used to use waze a lot, but found the routing to be very odd sending you on little roads to save seconds, google maps seems to be a little better and can be trusted. I pair google maps with the tomtom speed camera app and this can overlay and still provide alerts.

Their algorithm makes you Guinea pig to do their lab experiment. If you survive the trial, they send more people on that route.

+1 for tomtom speed cam app.

If you have the MK3 and the right hardware you can always enable traffic sign recognition I find that very helpful when trying to work out what speed limit is.

I prefer(ed) Waze, largely thanks to the speed camera alerts, but also because drivers here are pretty good at warning of hazards like cars or debris on the hard shoulder.

Sadly after years of using Waze, now I have the Ibiza I'm turning off it. There's a bug in Android Auto which means I can't control the Waze volume from the media centre, and even if I set it on the phone the voice starts giving instructions quietly but after 3 seconds shouts them out.

Have to give GMaps another look after reading these posts. Is there any way to overlay TomTom cameras on it via the Android Auto connection?

Started to use Waze more and more.
Takes least congested route.
Saved me time routing round a blockage on the M1.
Warns of stuff in the hard shoulder including police.
Warns of average speed traps through little towns and villages etc.
Google maps takes you the long way on all main roads and down high streets which are always busy. Frustrating.
Recently took us to a dirt road which was private and padlocked when trying to find Bedford Autodrome.
Put waze on and it took us strait there.
Only annoying thing is the septic tank voice and the fact distances are in feet!

I'll be honest - dirt road wise I had the opposite experience with Waze, It took me down a small farmers lane when I experimented with it on the way to work. It was an open road but I couldn't go much more than 20mph down it.
I'd still use Waze any day over Google maps though! So many more decent features e.g. Police notifications, Congestion notifications, Tells you the speed limit etc,

is there any way to get wze or google maps to record your journey? so lets say i run the apps without a journey in place (for traffic notifications perhaps), would i be able to see which route i took when i got home?

You can use google location history and then view your timeline.

I can drive with Google maps without even looking at the screen at all. The instructions are brief and non intrusive..

Everytime I try waze, it simply doesn't stop talking!! (try the voice English UK - Kate).
Disturbs my music and makes me mad.
It pauses for 1-2 seconds after every part of the instructions.

I know I can turn off voice or make it alerts only. But that's not what I want.

There should be an option is waze to select brief instructions..
