H4 HID problems

ive done a search but couldnt find anything that related to my question.

I was trying to fit a H4 (hi/Lo) HID kit to my girlfriends ibiza at the weekend. Got everything working fine apart from this quiry.

When the lights are off, for example you have just got the sidelights on, the Main beams flash. but when you turn the dipped beams on and go to flash or turn on the main beams, there is no change in the density of the light.

I have fitted several kits to previous cars and mates cars but they have always been H7 kits.

I think i know what the problem is, according to the instructions i should locate the "hi/lo relay" there is a plug which i am guessing is for this function on the wiring loom for the hids......But where is it?? or am i barking up the wrong tree?!

Any help would be great as she is nipping my head to get them fitted ha ha

Thanks

Andy

i think an lcr has been having this problem not sure if they fixed though. it could be a dodgy earth. or dodgy kit. has it always been the same. or just started happening.

Sounds like the wrong feed is being picked up.

If you have a H4 Bi-zenon kit fitted it needs three wires to work it per headlight

Wire 1 - earth (This one is obvious to find in the OEM three way headlight connector block)

Wire 2 - Power for the HID unit (This is the LOW beam live from the OEM three way headlight connector block)

Wire 3 - power for the hi/lo beam relay in the HID bulb unit (This is the HIGH beam live from the OEM headlight connector block)

There will be NO change in intensity of the HID when you put main beam on because the bulb MOVES position with the relay - it does not change the bulb so the light output is the same - just re-directed by the new position of the bulb unit.

i have the hi-lo beam kit (bi-xenon) the only problem i get from time to time is that one will not come on, as for what has been said, sounds like the guy above has the right idea :)

So where about is the Hi/Lo beam relay? cause it seems everything else is working okay appart from that.

If i was missing an earth or power, the hids wouldnt turn on at all.
there is a plug which comes of the ballast which i havent manage to locate its home....im guessing thats my problem.

Like i said in my previous post, i think its might have something to do with that Hi/Lo relay, so hopefully locating that will solve the problem.

Failing that i might have to maybe get one you guys on the phone when im fitting the hids....

The hi/lo relay is built in to the HID bulb unit - it moves the bulb backwards and forwards.

The extra plug will be the FEED for the hi/low relay - this should be connected to the main beam part of the OEM headlight thre way connector.

Have a look at the ballast connector to the OEM headlight connector - i will bet you only have two wires connected.

yeah there is a square box which ties both the ballasts together Which im guessing what ur calling the relay box....all the wires that are going to hard are covered so u cant remove any of them.

on the drivers side ballast i have got an earth and the 2 wires that connect the bulb to the ballast along with the pin for the h4 multi plug. on the passanger side i have all that bar from the h4 plug. but in adition i have got a possitive and a negative terminals which according to the instruction connect to the relevent terminal on the battery.

Now.....on each of the wiring looms coming out from the ballast i have this spare wire. Best way to describe it is, looks like a power for a h1 bulb. (that kinda size-if that makes anysense) And according to the instructions, these should connect to the hi/lo relay.

Should both nearside and offside h4 plugs still be in use?

Look at the wires coming of the bulb in this pic.
the 2 that connect to the ballast are easy to spot...whats that 3rd black one?

btw....this isnt my kit, just an example of google.

Look carefully at the pic. Each bulb has FOUR wires comming out of it.

Thick RED with its own plug - goes to ballast box
Thick BLACK with its own plug - goes to ballast box

Thin RED & Thin BLACK combined in a single plug - these plug in to the black control box and operate the relay built in to the bulbs.

When all connected you should have TWO spade connectors left.

One plugs in to the OEM H4 connector LOW positive feed
One plugs in to the OEM H4 connector HIGH positive feed
Looks like they do not use the OEM H4 connector EARTH connection.

For this system you will ONLY use one of the OEM H4 connector blocks on the car.
