H7 or H7R which ones are best?

I am just about to take the plunge also, can anyone answer this?

I read a post in the MK2 sections and it said that the H7R only lights up 1/2 the headlamp and does not produce much more light over OEM with 'better' bulbs in.

Will the car fail the MOT test if not fitted with H7R's and H7's instead?

Is it the full HID conversion or just bulb replacement?

It shouldn't fail an MOT running H7's if there just a replacment for the OEM bulbs.

Full HID kit, ballasts and HID bulbs, not just replacement halogen units i.e. Nightbreakers :)

I'm not fussed about blinding others as I can adjust this but I am worried that the bulb pattern with H7 HIDs (not H7R) will upset the MOT station as that's something that can't be controlled in a reflector headlamp unit.

Ahhh right ok.

All the HID kit's I see say 'Not road legal in the EU' so I didn't want the hassle with it tbh.

some may say lala land....
most people on here run hids and not been told off.
i have used for two mot with no issues, just make sure aligned correctly and will be fine.

the issue is with xenon lights needing to have by law light washers to keep clean. (think xenon anyway, but will be corrected or not)

It seems to largely depend on the MOT station you go to and the mechanic who performs it. I've seen people talk about getting through for years with HID kits and then suddenly failing one year due to having them.
You could always ask them ahead of the test if HIDs will cause it to fail, I reckon my local garage would give me an honest answer.

I just txt a friend who is an MOT tester and he says it's a pretty grey area. In general they shouldn't fail if aligned ok but it depends on the tester. Apparently the more blue you go, the more chance you have of failing.

I think I may go for the normal H7s as I think the H7R will look poo of only 1/2 a headlamp is illuminated and the beam doesn't go that much further than the OEM candles.

I've had both and would say stick with H7.

Got the H7R first and they didn't seem to have enough length on the beam if you know what I mean. The bottom half of the bulb was covered which meant that you could see no light was coming from the bottom half of the headlight. The light was good colour but thought my uprated halogen bulbs were a better beam.

Changed them for normal H7 HID using the same ballasts and it's much better. Still no dazzling oncoming traffic and not been flashed once.

Edit: got the 6000k H7's by the way

Just the answer I was looking for, I needed a direct comparison.

Thanks :)

Is it possible to hide the ballast and/or put a slightly darker filter over the lenses so that they don't look quite so insanely bright for the test? I've never had HIDs so I don't know exactly how the tester spots them.

Well that's no use. How about a body-coloured vinyl wrap, covered in oil and mounted against the bodywork? Then it'd look like a piece of metal :)
