Of course I don't think 280/290 is a bad car. Its great. I had 2 test drives and smiles as a child even 2 hours after... every time. For that money there is nothing better. But, if you are able to spend more, there are plenty of better cars. As always. You can compare Cupra to other HHs like R, S3, M135i, MegRS, A45 AMG or TypeR. But in real life there is no such thing like 'best for everyone'. Each of those cars is kinda different and You have to decide what is important to you, and what you can live with.

For me:
M135i RWD MT is a great rocket toy, love rwd cars but... not for a main car in the family. It could be dangerous for my wifey. S3 have the badge and nice looking plastic interior, but in my country is too expensive. MegRS is FWD and 3dr so not a good idea for a family car. A45 AMG too expensive and too loud, TypeR too youth. Cupra have great price, not so much great interior but its fwd. If its not a big problem for you, or you cant spend more - get the 290. If you love RWD or AWD cars and spending more is not a big deal, Cupra is not for you pal.

Exactly my thinking too! Same spec R was £10k higher when I got my 280.

I'm with you guys on this and why I also opted for the 290. The R didn't do anything to justify all the extra money for me. Also was out and about today for no more than 2 hours in the car and saw 6 Golf Rs. Since I ordered the Cupra 290 2 weeks ago I am yet to see even another Cupra on the road. I like the idea of having something that's a bit different and not so common.
