So if you can physically shake the whole assembly by hand in all directions would this be a reason for needing to change them??


erm... thats sounds to me as if its extremely loose?! :blink:

in which case thats BAD!!! you shouldn't be able to shake it at all! :no:

all im saying is that slight movement (from turning your wheels (the suspension twists with the wheel when they turn!)) and not sitting identical to each other is normal!


top mounts are cheap, about £8 each I think! so if your worried and can fit them yourself (you need to remove the suspension from the car to fit new top mounts!) then simply buy new ones for pease of mind!

lol its ok. cheers james, I'm sure they are fine then, just wanted to check. Out of interest anyone know how they are held on, is it just a 'normal' bolt? I remember the vw items on the older golfs had to be done with either a special key or brute force and an air gun

you can get aftermarket top mounts which lower your car by about 5 mm (i have seen them for old golfs etc)

and I THINK* you can get ones which have a better more durable bearing in them. though the OEM ones should be absolutely fine for a road car even if it does the odd track day! my advice would be to simply grease/oil up the bearing which sits in the top mount BEFORE fitting them to the suspension! (thats my opinion)

they are bolted in at the top of the suspension, so unfortunately you have to remove the suspension from the car to take them off!

and yes air guns are ideal i think! :)
 
Hi all, sorry to drag this up again but I still have concerns over my top mounts, as stated in my earlier post in this thread the gap at the top of the top mounts has opened up a lot over the 4 years I had the car, I've just had the car jacked up so there was no weight on the suspension and by lifting the wheel up and down my mount moves like this....



Is this normal when the car is jacked up, or do I need to get the mounts replaced?

Sorry for my ignorance, but is the top mount the rubber bit, or is the rubber bit part of the top mount, or are the two bits completely separate?
 
Cheers for the comments guys, when not jacked up my top mounts sit at much the same level as yours do James, so I guess they are ok for the time being.
