Heaters making a horrible noise

Remove the glovebox and shelf with the half a dozen screws that hold it in place (if you have a CD changer you'll have to remove that first). You should see the fan housing. The bottom panel comes off with a couple of screws, disconnect the wiring and the fan will fall out. Hopefully the 'something caught in it' will also fall out at the same time! 
From memory there are three screws along the top edge inside the glovebox. A further two just above or just below the shelf. Then if you remove the panel off the side of the dash there is one or two there. Then the whole unit drops out as one piece. You'll need a 5 or 6mm socket to remove them. If it doesn't just fall out you've missed one.
And if that black spongy thing is what i think it is, it was the same thing that made my fan go noisy!

could be the fan bearings or could be the A/C compressor- as climate control would make the air con kick in. it may potentially need re gassing as when the charge gets low the compressor does get considerably noisier either that or it may just be old and knackered. try using just the blowers if it is still noisy then chances are its the fan bearings, if the noise goes away its air con
It's probably thinking 'this setting isn't doing it's job so I'll use the next setting'. The climate control can operate separately to the air con though, I frequently run climate control to set the temperature but switch off the air con to save fuel.
Climate control is just a sophisticated Air Con actually. the way it works is by introducing cold air to alter the temperature of the cabin to the temperature you have requested. it is impossible to have climate control on and not have the A/C on. im not sure whether the MK1 is the same but in mine i have an 'ECON' option which just uses the heater blowers.

Nope, not the case, they are two different things. Its perfectly possible to have the temperature and airflow regulated by the climate control, but with the air conditioning completely off and the pump not running (a check under the bonnet will prove that). Alternatively, you can switch to manual, and just have air conditioning blowing cold air where you want.

As Slimy says. The climate control knows if you've switched the air cooling bits off and does its best to meet your demands by mixing unheated and heated air. On cold days, this works just as well as artificial cooling. The compressor is disabled when it gets to about 3°C to stop the evaporator, the cooling matrix in the cabin air system, from becoming blocked with ice.
then surely that's not true climate control? that's just you adjusting the temperature manually. The whole idea behind the system is that you set a temperature and it meets the requirement by either introducing air-con to cool it or introducing heat to warm it up.
obviously not going to get into a debate in this thread but climate control in its true respect will introduce the A/C as and when it needs it without any input from the operator so as i said before its impossible to have climate control on and it not use the A/C as you have no control over this
I absolutely agree with you that it needs a/c to get the temperature below outside ambient temperature, so yes there is a link between them. And if you press the 'auto' button, then yes they both run to get you the temperature you want by whatever method it needs. But they do run independently, you do have control over both, and on a cold winters day you can pretty much choose any temperature and the climate control can achieve it without the air con switching on.
So coming back to the original thread, if the air con is off then the noise is going to be coming from the fan.
