Was on my way home today, i overtook a cyclist in 2nd gear........there was a bang and lost lots of power. It sounded like the exhaust had gone as its very throaty. However when you try to drive it, it has no power, it kind of kangaroos along the road, there is white smoke from the exhaust. Is it the boost pipe? It has its MOT this tuesday so they can check it out but wouldnt mind knowing in advanced if its something not too serious.

Any help would be appreciated

Went back to where it happened and there is a trickle of oil on the road

Would the boost pipe coming off make the engine run so badly?

Yes as the engine will over fuel to compensate for the lack of boost from the turbo. You'll find the car will smoke badly and lack acceleration.

It could also be the turbo, but it's easier to check boost pipes before turbo.

The oil could be from within your boost pipes as engine oil from the breather over time will rest inside the pipes.

Highly doubt the turbo, was replaced 18 months ago. Yeah, no acceleration at all, can barely get it moving. Sounds extremely throaty though, lots of white smoke too.

Just because it was replaced 18 months ago wouldn't mean it's defiantly not the turbo..

Although, chances are as said above, that it will be a boost pipe at fault.

I had the same problem a month or so ago, and it ended up being the pipe into the top of the intercooler.
The lug had sheared off the pipe, and damaged the connection in the 'cooler.

All seems to point to boost pipe for me too mate. Should be easy to spot yourself so I wouldn't go paying anyone just yet.
Mine has done it before and they are exactly the same symptoms. It's runds rough and smokes because the engine is miss fuelling as it thinks there is more air going in than there actually is
