Hi again

Im still struggling to sort this steering sensor fault out. Series of events so far...
1) ABS light on constantly
2) Mates garage vag.com says Steering angle sensor fault
3) Vag.com clears fault, fault comes straight back
4) Tried to run the Ross Tech recalibration proceedure
5) will login but error comes up saying cannot reset.
6) mate called some Audi tech garage and apparantly the car needs a software update from germany??

So.........

Anyone heard of this update thing??? apparantly the car is patched into the computer in germany for the software but only SEAT can do it?? I hate the SEAT dealer in MK/Bucks so really is a last resort, plus I dont want to give them money if there is little chance of it working.

Or do I actually need a steering angle sensor.

Its an 04 Cupar R and the car has been driving fine with the light on with no effects at all.

Over to the experts. Cheers Lee

Did you hit a kerb or something recently, knocking the alignment out?

If the alignment is out then the light will turn on again, but that would mean something would have to be really bent!

But sounds like yours won't even reset at all.

Looks like it might be worth changing the sensor, certain someone has a few for sale on eBay at the moment

No never knock or bent, Ive had her from new and she is spotless. The light came on about 6 months ago and like I said never had any problems with the light on but as you say it just wont reset.

I would like to know whether this software thing is worth a go, if anyone knows or whether the sensor is shot maybe. seems a random thing to go though.

Worth resetting sensor if possible alignment issue. It might be good idea to do 4 wheel alignment and make sure your suspension if fine. Proper check might payback with mpg saving and longer tyre life at the same time. Look for local place with Hunter or Snap-On equipment. That way you can be sure it will be done right.

The alignment is fine, and suspension setup is completely standard but perfect.

Its either a new sensor or a software issue I think. I just dont have any experience with this at all and the light is bugging the pants out of me.

Cheers though.

Towcester.. what SEAT garage do you use if any??

Did you manage to get to the bottom of this as I have just encountered the same error code?

I have just changed the CV boot and the lower ball joint on the nearside and then got the tracking done as it was off the scale. Everything was OK until today on the motorway when the traction control light flashed on about 10 times and then stayed on.

VagCom says: 00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G28)
003 - Mechanical Failure

Just wondering if this is a replacement sensor or recalibration?

Hi mate

Done quite a lot or reading into this and spoken to a few people, if you have then its a case of recalibration or a new sensor.

I tried the ROSS recalibration procedure and it wouldn't reset, and I am into a new sensor. I haven't had it replaced yet since there is no noticeable difference in the driving but you are looking at about an hours labour plus part.

Where do you live?? finding a decent garage to do it is half the battle!!

Ellisisium: The code says mechanical failure, so it's likely that a new sensor is needed.

The steering angle sender is installed on the steering column just behind the steering wheel. There are two electrical connectors which should be visible underneath the unit once you've removed the shrouds around the column. You could check these on the off chance it's the wiring or connectors that have gone wrong. Otherwise it's steering wheel off, after carefully disconnecting the airbag.

If the steering wheel is not straight when you're driving straight ahead, this can cause a steering angle sender error. In this case simply get the steering wheel set straight, by adjusting the track rods.

Yeah I think this has something to do with the camber (even though VagCom says mechanical failure) as I replaced the lower ball joint but set it all the way in meaning possibly more positive camber than needed. It is only when I moved the ball joint mid way that the light came on so I moved the ball joint back and the light has now gone off.

I need to replaced a couple of the wishbone bushes then will look at full alignment. Hope you get it sorted MK R BOY, cheers for the replies
