In my opinion deffo not, it's a very capable powerplant and can return 40+ mpg if driven like ms daisy

you will read a lot of bigging up of diesels on here as if they have just discovered the wheel, us 20vt owners keep the bragging down a bit ;)

And like you say it has to be wound up, its not that great for real world driving though. My mums Golf is heavier, but its no where near returning 40mpg.

The stats are very similar, just the in gear times are better for the diesel. Still he wants petrol so we won't go there.

Sorry but I think its great being able to drive 'briskly' and get 40 mpg ;)

Mind you, I can't make mine pop a flame or sound like rash's jet fighter! :D

I must learn this style of driving 'briskly' as when I do it I tend to only get about 32mpg out of my FR TDI. 'Spirited' driving takes that figure down to 25-27mpg though.

So anyone managed to squeeze a 4wd system into the Ibiza yet?
Maybe rash could get his to go faster with abit more traction.

lol, I returned 25mpg round donnington in mine.:funk:

Its all about the distance, once you get the car on a run anywhere between 50 and 80mph and you'll be returning between 65 and 45 mph

No wrecked golf 4motion's that you could cannibalise for parts to make a custom system?
Would be one hell of a project, so maybe when your golf's sorted you will think about it again.

dont forget you also need to weld a new floor pan in
have custom driveshafts
custom propshaft

and also loose more power from fly wheel to wheels and would take a year to complete and also would cost about 10k to fit ;)

I think this sums it up.... :headhurt:

Of course to do such a thing you would need to have a second car to round about in... such as that nice mk2 golf your working on atm.

Trust me, the TT ones are good enough for doing that! :D

He wasn't asleep, he's trying to pretend mine isn't faster than his ;)

na just you banging on about miles p.e..r :sleepy: gal......................

p.s your new signature is the muts nuts  ad's

Sortof... good economy whilst having fun :D

I'll stop there, don't want to bore the petrol owners ;)

Consider us already bored! I've just read thru 4 pages of this "It won't turn into a derv Vs. petrol debate". Total rubbish if you ask me.

I'm bringing it back on topic. I owned a diesel FR for 2 years, the sold it for my petrol cupra. To sum it up:

Cupra + points:
- It's petrol engine is faster
- It's petrol engine has more useable power
- It's petrol engine sound's better
- Cupra handles better. The uprated brakes are also an added bonus
- Does not sound like a tractor, bus, lorry
- Does not deploy a mobile smoke screen on acceleration, causing a pile up behind you

Cupra - points:
- I scuffed an alloy

FR TDi + points
- The one I bought was black, not yellow

FR TDi - Points:
- Power delivery is shot
- Diesel cars smell funny
- They also sound funny
- Derv owners go on about Miles Per Gallon like they are from greenpeace
- Smoking in public places is illegal

I would say the results are conclusive. Score one for the 20VT owners. The money saved on list price by buying the pertol over the asmatic can also be better spent on other things.

here here!
love this bit and i quote "- Smoking in public places is illegal "

Petrol is more useable power? Are you real!? In everyday road driving, overtakes and general combination of britans roads the diesel is more suited. Driving like a maniac or on a race track, I admit the petrol is the car to have.

The petrol Cupra might not be flat, but the 150 FR petrol is.

And with regards to mpg, when you do 35k a year and your car goes as well flat out and quicker when your not (low to midrange), 50plus mpg is something you have to care about. Afteral Diesel sales are going to overtake petrol new car sales soon and for good reason. None of us would have predicted that 10 years ago. :)
