Yeah my brother got his fronts tinted at the weekend he got 20% and the guy said you can usually get away with that

but he got 5% on back..lol so it makes the fronts look lighter than they actually are

Sorry to hear about this mate. I think you got very lucky!!

I'm always thinking about this when i'm driving. The doors are always locked.

Thing is with me. I have 3 years no claims so i cant protect them. Being 20 means if i claim i will have to sell the car as i wont get insured next year!! Roll on next year when i can protect them!!

how does it work?

Its triggered of the drivers door opening so works either if my keys are stolen or if I'm dragged out of the car. There are two systems, one has a hidden micro switch that you just tap when starting the car or after the door is opened with the engine running, the other is like a credit card that you just swipe near a hidden receiver.
It allows the car to travel a approx a mile so you are out of a position of danger, it starts to miss-fire and slowly brings the car to a halt and then cuts out refusing to re-start.
Coupled with a tracker you can't really do much more to ensure you'll get your car back which as mine is a 30,000 mile minter I don't want some scrote ending up with the results of my hard work.

Yeah, we had similar systems in SA. My dad's car had the cutout after 5 km's, and a mate's car had a hidden switch you had to press before starting the vehicle. However, they tried to steal it, couldn't start it, just wrecked the interior of it.

Also, the downside to having cutout switches and tracker is the hijackers take you with them to ensure the vehicle keeps going and if it cuts out, they beat you up/kill you. More often than not, the tracker unit is found in a ditch in South Africa, as the hijackers know where to look and how to remove it.

But that's in SA.. just trying to join in the convo

So in otherwords the only way forward is with the flame throwers. It'll stop the car from getting nicked in the first place.

Yeah!

they won't steal another car after that

In all honesty, the best thing to do is give them the car. I know it's your pride and joy, but in all honesty, it's just a car. We were lucky both times that they just took the car and left us alone.

I do like the flames idea tho, would prefer the car to lock itself, seal up airtight, release knockout gas and alert a control station somewhere.

Or get something like KITT :)

If you're looking for a deterrant, you'll want to have something that doesn't kill the assailants :) - much rather deal with the insurance for a stolen car than a jail term for homocide!

Shame we can't fix up something that squirts CS spray out of the wiper jets...

Probably should rig up a battery to the exterior door handles... respray it with a high-metal-content paint for conductivity. They won't be getting in through the windows, so figures they'll have to use the door handles?

this is going to sound really dull ,but this example is a good reason to keep car looking completely basic or to take off all sporty badges, even have a towbar fitted{towbar can be useful defence too saves bumper}.boring i know but in cities like birmingham ,manchester, liverpool, you,d have less interest in your car,if you dress up with wheels and kit you make yourself wide open for attack, but dress down your car and you,ll be just passed as a boring runabout......until the laws are changed in favour of the victims and the criminals get a tougher punishment including the death sentence you,re better moving to a small town far away from the cities if you want a flash car

What your basically saying is dont have a nice car because there are criminals out there? How far are you going to take it? Don't wear jewellery? Don't wear nice clothes because they think you got money? come on.....

on that comment, as no matter how barbaric you think South Africa is, it's blatantly illegal to have a system to cut off people's legs. Aside from the fact that the force needed to cut through a bone makes it physically impossible to have something like that UNDER a car.

Anyways, the point remains that these measures are still Illegal in South Africa, despite there being a much higher hijack rate. Just be thankful they don't take you with them.

No, wear jewellery and nice clothes, but just be a bit more sensible. Bad things do happen, and it's only by being aware and vigilant that you can prevent it.
