Might be a daft question but I've read the handbook from cover to cover (not at once!)
Anyway it says that hill hold is a function of ABS and ESC. Now ESC etc is standard on the FR so I am wondering if anyone with VAG-COM knowledge knows if it is an option that can just be switched on via the software.
Given hill hold and tyre pressure monitoring is only a £50 option makes me wonder if it is as simple as that.

The options are from a 3rd party so I guess they would have some trickery behind it.

Should of got it if it was just a £50 option ;). Your dealers maybe able to do it for you.

Hill hold, ABS, ESC and tyre pressure monitor all use the same wheel sensors so it should just need activating.

The tyre pressure monitor is not pressure but tyre diameter monitoring.
The abs sensors monitor that all 4 wheels are turning the same speed - if one is different it assumes a low pressure and puts the light on.

Hill hold control needs a sensor to detect the degree of incline. I can't think of a reason why a standard car would need that (except for stop-start) so most cars probably don't have the appropriate sensor.

You sure about that?
Cause mine is just hold, no hill needed. It activates even when the road is level.

Pretty sure mine doesn't work on the level or when starting off downhill. I don't have the manual to hand but the Skoda Fabia one says:-

"The uphill start assist is active as of a 3 % slope, if the driver door is closed. It is
always active on slopes when in forward or reverse start off. When driving downhill,
it is inactive."

If your car is a DSG are you sure that you aren't confusing hill start assist with the normal DSG action?

Yes, I have a cupra so it's DSG.
Mine activates on a level road but not on downhill. Definitely not the DSG cause I can hear that special low buzz electronic sound the hill hold does, during which time you should start moving.

I've got HHC and there is no low buzz electronic sound when it activates, you can't here anything it just comes on when on a hill but not on the level. Not sure what's going on with your's

You sure you can't hear it? It needs to be really quiet. Night, closed windows, it's really low. Try it. You can hear it as soon as you let go of the brakes when the car stays stationary on its own (HH active). As soon as you hit the gas it stops. I have a friend with an FR and it's the same with his too.

Our second 1.6 Sport had it as I added ESP. In the same spot waiting at lights on a hill one day it worked and another not so I could not trust it in the end!

Any chance you used the handbrake on one of the occasions ?

i find it works if i just use the foot brake but if i also use the handbrake it cancells HH.
