been reading a lot on this site and i was just thinking how can i tell if i have got a water pump with plastic or metal ? on looking at all the paperwork with the car (collect it on thursday) the cambelt was done just 3k ago but nothing on paperwork about waterpump.

Unless you have a receipt for a water pump you may not be able to tell. The VAG group fitted some metal but mostly plastic water pump impellers from the mid 90's.

My 95 Polo suffered from the plastic impeller becoming brittle due to the Glycol content in Antifreeze and it simply split from the shaft and fell in to the block.

If the Timing belt was done at a Garage then ring and ask them as it may show on their records...

If you have the paperwork on the cambelt change, you should be able to contact that dealer and see if it was replaced at the same time? I don't know very much detail on the Toledo yet (still being a newbie) but all my other cars got a new water pump along with the cambelt.
