How common is complete engine failure on Cupra 280 290 300 R

Just a general question of what are the chances of complete engine failure on these cars in relation mainly to timing chain tensioner snap/stretch/jump never heard if it before today just wondered if anyone had experience or any insight thanks in advance

Was an issue with the early 280 turbos but apart from that very few issues

Very little as far as I’m aware. I know of a few people running their Golf Rs at over 509 BHP without issue. The EA888 is quite a strong engine.

Stress on the timing chain only increases with a higher rev limit, higher lift/longer duration cams, and stronger valve springs .
If none of these have been done there's no reason a stock chain would fail. Increased boost, etc makes no difference to the chain.
Tensioners are another matter, especially in the bike world. If you hear timing chain rattle, get in to your dealer.

Timing chain tensioner failure was an issue for VW on the previous generation 2.0 EA888 engine in the mk6 Golf GTI. I don’t know which Seat models would’ve had this engine or whether there was a similar issue with the timing chain tensioner - presumably the mk2 Leon Cupra had the same engine? There’s a 65 page long thread on tensioner failure on the mk6 Golf GTI board over on golfgtiforum.co.uk.

There were three revisions to the design of tensioner during the life of the mk6 Golf. The last revision - produced from May 2012 seemed to have been OK, and I’ve not read of any tensioner failures or chain stretch / breakage problems on the current generation 2.0 EA888 engine used in the mk7 Golf / mk3 Leon Cupra, so the current generation seems to be fine.

MK2 has the ea113, same as the golf 6r. So we get cambelt and possibly timing chain.

Ah, that would make sense. I was aware the Golf 6r had the belt driven EA113 engine, so it makes sense the performance model of the Leon range from the same era / generation did too.
