hi all,i am complete newbie to all of this i was just wondering how you all clean and detail you cars best products to use ?step by step ? thanks gary.

Yes it was, I really don't understand why they use the word detailing. It's not a word I would associate with cleaning a car and I would never use it in that context. Mainly because most people I know would look at me a bit sideways if I said I had detailed my car. They would assume I have gone round it with a clip board and made notes on it.

Anyway to answer the question, I do the 2 bucket method. I then dry it with one of those waffle towels and apply some Autoglym polish followed by Autoglym wax.

This is dependant on time and weather and normally would take me about 1.5 to 2hrs including a cuppa and a bite to eat.

Not the same without a cuppa!!

Since when did doing a good job at washing/waxing become "detailing" anyway?

Not surprisingly, it's an American term. They call it detailing, we still call it valeting. Don't forget, Meguiars, Autoglym, Poorboys and Dodojuice are all US companies. Good job we don't buy many American cars or it would all be hood, trunk, tires, fender, windshield and gas.

Dammit I use almost all those words... :)

Granted, I am very American-afied

And I also say "store" instead of "shop"...unless it is a shop

I wash every 2 weeks or more if necessary. Have yet to polish/wax. Paint needs a restore job before I start applying wax.
P) if needed, bug/bird lime remover first
1) AutoGlym or Supagard alloy cleaner on alloys. Brush in, do next alloy, rinse previous tyre.
2) garden hose rinse/wet car
3) shampoo car using Karcher+AutoGlym shampoo
4) 2 bucket method with a bit more soap in one bucket. Top half first
5) Rinse with garden hose
6) wash alloys, rinse
7) high pressure on wheel arches/inside alloys.
8) dry with waffle and chamois
9) trim and tyre dressing
10) Turtle wax ice on windshield :)
11) Hoover interior
12) gloss wipes on interior
Then go out and get some gas from the gas station.

I'm terrible when it comes to cleaning the car! Every Sunday afternoon without fail! Rain or shine it has to be done.(yes I wash it in the rain, it actually helps stoping streaks). wash and wax to clean, chamois. I use turtle wax red once a month to stop any stone chips showing through, but otherwise I use meguiars as it shines like new and beads like crazy when it rains. Black trim wax all trims, spray up all the tyres. I hardly ever touch the interior though, it looks like the inside of a tractor due to golf gear being chucked about in it. If a bird caks on it mid week, then it gets washed again. Ive cleaned it three days in a row many times!

Ps. What is the two bucket method?

the two bucket method is one with soap warm water the over bucket is just water everytime you wash a bit of car and need soap you rinse in the bucket with water and then use soap bucket and repeat till done :)

I consider "detailing" for those with OCD, personally I do the procedure below every six months and try wash weekly with Megs Gold Class and dry.

I'll be doing this on Tuesday/Wednesday when I pick my FR up from the dealership if it's dry;

1. Rinse off the car with garden hose.
2. Wash with washing up liquid, rinse in separate bucket. (Using a soft mitt from Tesco, nothing special)
3. Dry the car using a microfibre towel from Tesco.
3. Using a mix of water/Megs Gold Class in a spray - clay the car with fine grade claybars from eBay.
4. Wash the car with Megs Gold Class.
5. Dry the car with the Tesco microfibre. (Clean door jams, etc)
6. Panel by panel, apply a coat of Collinite 476S.
7. Buff off Collinite.

For me a single coat does fine, car beads well and has a nice smooth finish.

ive just got some ag hd wax going give it try tomorrow any else ever used this ?

You'd really be better on detailing world.

I only spent around 3 hours on there and learned pretty much how to do everything besides machine polishing lol.

autoglym products are ok not the worst not the best, never used hd wax before so dont know.

depends on budget really as there are lots of good quality products out there everyone will have there own preferences

when i clean my car i usually start with valet pro snow foam, rinse, wash, rinse, dry with microfibre towels. wheels done with bilbery wheel clener

once the cars dry if im spending couple hours, i usually apply coat of poorboys blackhole glaze followed by either chemical guys blacklight or finishkare fk1000.

if its just a top up once the cars dry i will apply use chemical guys v7 hybrid or synthetice dealer
