How long should I hold the key to start the engine

Simple question: Am I doing something harmful to my car if I only touch the key and let it start despite the fact the engine needs more time to start or should I keep holding the key (2-3 secs) until the engine starts.

I'm that used to doing it that way I keep forgetting when getting into the Wifey's car..which then doesn't start quick enough
