Right been doing my cambelt, tensioner and water pump today on my 2003 AMK Leon Cupra R. Got it all apart and then fitted new tensioner, damper and water pump but the belt is soo tight its like its too small i just don't want to damage the belt. I have a bolt in the tensioner so that it is all the way back as far as possible. If anyone can help please it will be much appreciated.

I put it on by lining and putting the belt up on the cam and crank pulleys, then twisting the belt onto the water pump pulley last. Rotate crank at least twice after fitting to make sure marks line up correctly.

This worked for me but I'm sure others will do it differently, but the belt is stupidly tight!

Yh it deffinately is tight lol gonna have a go at it this morning, its defo the right belt as has same teeth as old one. Cheers i'll try that way of getting in on as putting on cam last aint happening, failing that i will have to try other options. I don't think its a bad job other than getting the belt on, it all come apart quicker than expected

As above, front run 1st but then I do water pump and tensioner pulley last.
Its tough on the thumbs but does go! The tensioner does retract a bit more with the pin out as well.
Use an m5 thread and nut to wind it down a bit more.

Done it this morning :) went straight on some how haha I put it on the water pump but just on the edge then managed to just slip it onto the cam pulley but anyhow its on and running :D cheers guys

Timing belts are not really an easy job, if it goes wrong it does it in an very expensive way.

I think on the tdi's you need special tools to lock the cams.

Yh not sure about the tdi's but on my 1.8t i did'nt need to buy any locking tools. Its not an easy job but its a good feeling when you do it yourself :) But if you don't know what your doing then don't attempt it as if it goes wrong then it will cost you big time
