How to use parking assist?

OK, before I make a complete ass of myself in a local car park, how do you actually get the car to park itself.
I've been reading the manual and still cant get it!

If you use park assist when parallel parking, I would urge a degree of caution as there’ve been a number of instances reported on various forums over the years of damaged alloys when using it.

When parallel parking, park assist will use the vehicles immediately in front and behind the intended parking space as reference points. If those vehicles have parked badly - e.g. wheels touching the kerb or mounting the pavement - park assist will attempt to park your car in a similar manner. Refurbishing kerbed diamond cut alloys isn’t cheap (probably around £120 or more per wheel these days for a good quality refurb).

From what I’ve read, many owners use park assist once or twice for the novelty effect and to show friends what it can do. After that, it tends to not get used that much.

I'm not sure I'd bother. I tried it a couple of times, never once has it worked properly. Last time it nearly drove me into the next car trying to reverse park.

Park Assistance turns the front wheels when the car is stationary; something I have always believed to be a no-no. Would be marked down for doing that on an IAM test?

I've used it with perfect success many times now. It's really useful for parallel parking in a jiffy, if it's a busy road.
I keep it as a shortcut on the homescreen so it's quickly available.

You press the button and drive along, the car scans for open spaces, and you get the option to press "Start" once you pass an open space. If there is no room for a parallel park, it will give you the option of perpendicular instead.

Turn your mirror adjustment knob to left (if you have RHD) and the mirror will dip down when reversing and show you the curb. Use this as a gauge.

Yes I have the shortcut on the home screen.
But what button to press, there are two P options.
From what I've seen on youtube its the top one? So what is the bottom one for?

Since I don’t have 360 cam, I can tell you that on mine other button in shortcuts turns on parking sensors and reverse camera, so it is useful if you want to turn on sensors yourself.

To be on the safe side, there is an option to automatically stop while maneuvering (not directly linked to park assist), so while you go back-and-forth in parking, it slams the breaks before you hit something.
DISCLAIMER - It did work from time to time for me; not sure will it always “catch” you and prevent damage, so still you need to be careful and take it slow until you get a feel for the system.

As people said, it is interesting gimmick, or maybe helpful to some new drivers, but if you drove cars before for more than 5 years, you’ll realize that it is actually slower than doing it yourself. However it may help you get the feeling of dimensions of the car…

I probably won't use it, had it in last two cars, the first a merc I tried it once. The second a RR Evoque I never even tried it in nearly 3 years

Just thought I must make the effort but its not particularly obvious how to operate it. Guess I'll just have to make a tit of myself somewhere!
