That's exactly why I trust no "mechanic".

One gave car back with all wheel nuts hand tight.
Another wanted "about 2000" - and another I actually paid £800 to weld a cracked engine casing, only to find it was just a broken engine mount.

And more examples of fleecing a%^eholes I can't bother to list.

What that has taught me is to not trust and learn how to do things myself and invest in tools to do the jobs I need.

The result now is that I know what work has been done, I know what parts I've used and I know I have only myself to blame. The car I have is far better than when I bought it and the cost will show itself over the coming years.

LEON KILLS is unfair, MECHANICS KILL I'd be happier with.

Sounds familiar!!

Sorry for you Rich, what a nightmare, understand your sickness. Hope you can shave off some of their ridiculous price ups. Good luck :censored:

Cheers for your sympathy guys and girls, feel better today. Was originally booked in for a MOT with £10 off so if they are willing to shave off a 1/4 off an MOT, then they should be willing to shave off some of this nightmare bill i reckon!

£200 for a fog light?!? £50 break fluid!?! I'd have said fix the main issue "alternator" and fix the rest somewhere else. I've heard horrible story's from vw dealer's but won't deal with seat as the staff are stuck up c*nts in Peterborough. Didn't even want to help me with my old mk1

I had the same issue with main dealer when mine went on for a recall they called me and said it's "too modified "
And could I explain to the techs what the aftermarket equipment was for and they wanted to charge me to undo the deletes
It only went in for the coilpacks recall

That is ridiculous! So they were only familiar with standard engines, i find a trained mechanic that doesn't know what components in an engine are for very odd

I need to speak to my garage before i say there name on here, not sure if it's aloud or if it's only for sponsorship type of thing.

Update, yesterday they said ready at 2, just rang (3:30) and now its just going into the workshop to be ready at 5! So that's pushing 20 hours of time now....all for an alternator change, but its ok, not like i have anything to do now i can't get to work!

Any advice on how i should word this? In a politically correct manner of course, my first instinct was to start with the line "look you c*nts!"?

Word it via phone call so they know you're coming with discount in mind. Ask to speak to the manager and ask why such a delay has happened, explain why you want discount "loss of days wage" and why you came to them...Swift service and you feel LET DOWN by the experience.

Alternator takes about a hour to change tops... take the aux belt off, undo 2 bolts and 3 wires and then the reverse to refit, god knows how they can justify £500.

Yep, same experience. Just hold the belt up with string while you work so the darn thing doesn't fall and then got to re-route it.

Ask what they do different to a independent who charges £200 less.

https://www.clickmechanic.com/price-estimates/volkswagen/golf-iv/alternator-replacement

An alternator from ECP will cost about £100, more for a Bosch but all have to be fit for purpose and carry the same warranty anyway.

Trouble is they have you over a barrel but learn the lesson and try to find an independent, ideally a VW specialist. They are out there...somewhere.

How did you get on with the discount

The ballache didnt end, got the labour for fitting the alternator free so 100 quid. The washer jets and brake fluid change over wasnt done as they "didnt have time" so i was like great less money to pay anyway and i won't be coming back! However....

Started the engine up and my check engine light was now on....went back in, bearing in mind this is now 5:30, gave my keys over, he had to ring to get a mech back, half an hour of waiting since they'd gone home. They had no idea why after plugging it into the diagnostics as no codes were coming up. Mech arrived, apparently a connection on the manifold was loose, so re run the diag and now its fine. For the extra hour of my life i can come back and have the jets and brake fluid changed for free, so 60 quids worth of apologies. Since its free i'll be getting that done, after that they can f*ck off

Glad to hear you've had some triumph over those arseholes. Hope you can sit back and enjoy the holidays with some peace. :D
