I'd think that getting that engine sorted out will be the best way as I don't think that you will easily find a suitable replacement engine that is not about to give trouble.
Have you checked on the availability of exchange engines from proper engine re-conditioners - doing that might confirm/dismiss my comments above and help you a bit.
