hi, new to the site

i currently own saxo vtr, 98bhp version and my bro has just bought the 16v mk2 ibiza cupra. i love it and have been quoted the same insurance as what i am paying now on the 8v version... would it be worth the change... i know i will get biast opinion but you lot know bout your ibizas so your best to ask!!

cheers:)

I'd say it depends on how you drive. Not the quickest of the lights but I love the way it drives. Its a bigger car inside too that the saxo which was one of the deciding factors for me as i'm 6'2"

cheers mate.

i dont like the looks i get... oh just another chav in the saxo (which im not) but a year ago it was quickest and cheapest insurance i could afford and plus... rents paid for car, its newer than the ibiza but after being in my bros the whole feel of car feels better, handling though i dont know because the saxo is good.
for some reason though the insurance hasnt gone down prob due to he amount that get smashed and now can afford insurance on ibiza...

anyone else give me anymore details??

saxo = not good. ever seen one in a crash? they crumple like tinfoil.

The ibiza is better made, bigger and you don't look like a chav. Plus its not french

Biast opinion tho, I just hate saxo's

Depends what you want - if you want something quicker, the I think you'll be disappointed by an 8v Cupra Sport as it's not really any quicker than a S*xo VTR. If you want something a bit better built that isn't going to get as many folks looking down their nose at you, an 8v Cupra Sport would be worth further investigation.

As for handling... it's an acquired taste. Personally, I don't really rate any of the "great" french warm/hot hatches - S*xo's, 106's, 205's, they all leave me cold. The Ibiza, IMHO, is a great point to point car, particularly once you realise how much grip there is - which isn't immediately apparent. The car warns you when you are approaching the limit and the handling is, on the whole, very safe - which is one of my major beefs with the aforementioned french cars, as there it all starts going wrong very quickly, usually very fast indeed without much warning.

Welll I looked at a V reg Saxo VTR when I was looking around to buy my car last year.

What a difference, far too many to list but....

Saxo = Crap, Bits of the interior fell off when I asked my BF to move the mirror,
Rev counter wasn't working, engine looked like it had been in a field most of its life

Went to drive the 8V Cupra Sport (S reg) and a world of difference - not a really fast car but quick enough off the lights and solidly built and VW reliability, I am a convert - all my other cars have been japanese..

I love my car - even though that is a sad thing to say!

GET RID OF THE SAXO!

I never had an issue with build quality on my saxo vtr, but it was brand new. IMO its one of the best handling cars i've driven (GMC bilsteins -50mm) and was great fun. Down points of the car - did feel cheaply built in comparison to my current car and previous cupra and mainly the "chav" aspect that comes with the car these days.

My current Ibiza Cupra 8v is worlds apart in build quality (p reg and still feels solid) to the saxo and feels much more composed on the road. Most of the 8valves have more bhp than factory state aswell. Mine was recorded at 128bhp (standard 115bhp).

brilliant... keep them coming i am being persuaded wit every thread. me saxo does feel like its not built well, but handling is an issue with me as i quite like the country lanes near me. the saxo is great but has always worriesbout being in crash. if right one comes up think the ibiza will be new car for me... never see many black ones and thats onlt colour i like, maybe kiwi coloured but there are few of them near me, inc my street!
suppose just got to wait for the right one now!!!

cheers eveyone:)

have had two Mk 4's....still got one of them.. but 'still' went out and bought a Mk2 as a 'fun-around'.... yup you heard right.. a FUN -around!! its a fun car to drive. it certainly suprises a LOT of people when you get it performing ...

If you're interested what a 16v compares like to an 8v over 1/4 mile, there's a little download here for you on an old thread...

Just had to update the dead link.

My mate I live with owns a VTS, and I've got the Beeza. Never feels safe getting back in the VTS, and I owned a 1.1 for a good couple of years. Although you quickly get used to the power and want more, it still puts a smile on your face & is never a dull drive. The *pick up* has been complemented on by my VTS friend when overtaking, sits at (if I remember) 3k revs at 70mph, high 30's, low 40's mpg on motorway journeys etc.

wow... my bro will be surprised then. although he has rr'd at 164bhp so few mods needed i think if i wanna be anywhere near close!!

The 8v is so much fun! the torque at the bottom end is what makes it the better car in my opinion, as you dont have to rev the nuts off of it to go anywhere.

I have lots of twisty country lanes around me and i just go around them in 3rd because the power is always there and if a nice open straight comes along it'll see you to 85 ;) before 4th.

The handling doesnt really bother me, you might have to slow abit more for corners, but because that grunt is there you can just power out the other side of the corners.

Build quality wise this is the best car i have had, its not caused me any issues in 6months of ownership, it 7 years old in april and still feels solid with NO RATTLES :)

Only thing is fuel economy, mid 40's are acheivable but if your going to hang around the middle of the rev range expect 32mpg as a max really.

Reason the VTR insurance hasnt gone down so much is because so many kids write them off.

I'd buy one m8, I can walk all over vtrs all day long. OK ego trip over lol

Seriously I came from a 1.25 zetec fiesta which got a roasting daily. The 8v cupra has calmed me down on day to day running but when the time comes its nice to knock it down a cog and make a pass ;)

The one thing they suck at is after 90mph. Theres not much in terms of grunt after this speed and this is where your brothers mk2 16v will come into its own. Apart from that upto 70-80 not much in sub 2litre NA that can get past.

The handling is a little scary at first IMHO as the rear is far too light for my liking but once you get some decent size wheels and tyres on it and a sports suspension kit (as the std suspension will be shot when you get one)...... it'll fly. Its taken me a while to get used to it and fully extract all of it but it does give you pleanty of feedback IMHO. For the insurance and cost of car I dont think theres much out there that can match it. And on a country lane when your fully committed it can go suprisingly well. Just watch out for that rear end under heavy braking and quick direction changes / lift offs......... Don't be put off though just learn to master it :D Its like any car really :)

Get some 10-15 mm rear spacers for it as well. Cheap as chips and it gives an instant notable handling gain !

Ahh yes that back end i forgot to mention that, scary as hell at first but when you master it its great on the edge fun. My suspensions all ok atm just hit 50k so its not had too much and had lead a relatively easy life.

I also agree with the above that the cupra does calm you down on day to day driving, mainly becuase of the fuel consumption, but also because if you stick your foot down too hard in tight spaces you'll end up in the car in front.

back end out on an island is fun,.. did a little dance on the way to , and from the Brum meet a couple of months ago with one of the lads on here, (he got a Leon cupraR) funny as fook kickin' the mk2's ass out on the twisty's....

As I said in an earlier post - there's actually a hell of a lot more grip to play with than is immediately apparent. There's plenty of warning that you're approaching the limit, and if you do push too hard, bottle it and lift off, the tail breaks nice and progressively - particularly if you add a couple of psi to the "book" rear tyre pressures. No spacers on mine as I quite like the slightly lively rear end. I'm running Koni dampers with Vogtland springs, and also a set of Cupra 20vT wheels with 195/45R16 Yokohama A539's.

With a bit of familiarity and a bit of commitment it's a car that can really be hussled along at far greater pace on the twisties than the numbers on the spec sheet might suggest - and I find you can return pretty respectable economy even whilst "making good progress" on a B road blast - mid to high 30's sort of respectable. Great fun, and I still get a lot of enjoyment from mine, which i've owned from new - shame i'm overseas at the moment and missing out on the road rally season.

As for performance at 90+, yep, that's true enough but how often is it really a concern (officer)?

great... sounds like my sort of car!!! anyone know of anyone black ones with lowish mileage like 50k for sale...haha!! was one on autotrader last week but missed out! damn

yeah it done 74... bit high. my saxo done 42 but suppose thats had its best years already. dont want to be going to something too high though!!
