can anyone tell me if its possible to swap my partners 1.4tdi from a short to a long life service. She currently does 20-25000 mile a year so bigger service intervals would help. However whats the price hike for long life services and will it have any detrimental effects?

I don't think this is possible?! The whole point of a service interval is that it is designed around the needs of the car/engine.
I don't think you can just change to longer service intervals and pay a little bit more.

You could have just leave it longer between services if you wanted, but that's probably not recommended. You'll increase engine wear, not notice potential problems until they become real problems etc.

The only real option would be to swap for a car that requires less frequent servicing. BUt that will probably cost you too.

even if long life service, i would always change the oil every 10k max. My mini is long life, and i have already changed the oil, despite the computer saying uit had another 2000 miles till due.

He's referring to the variable servicing interval option that VW offer with cars featuring the same engines as in the Seats. Basically requires a higher spec oil, the ECU monitors the condition of the oil, driving style, starts & stops etc to offer much extended service intervals where possible (eg if the car spends it's life cruising on the motorway).
