french cars are poorly built with cheap materials in my opinion. they feel flimsy. my mates got a saxo vts which is the range topper & the seats feel like deck chairs, all the switches, door handles etc feel flimsy like theyre going to break off if your not gentle & so on. i hate french cars BUT, & this is a big but, i do have a soft spot for the renault 19 16v. just love the sound of them & think they look great. wouldnt have something just cos it looks nice though.

My mate used to have a 19 16v. Had to keep a straw in it as when it rained, the rain funnels in the bonnet vent straight into a spark plug hole. He uses the straw to suck the rain water out the hole

same problem my mate had with his. he put some gaffer tape around the spark plug cover on the rocker cover & that solved it. that was the least of his worries though as the head gasket was so badly gone that it used more water than fuel. car went like a b*****d though before head gasket problems kicked in.

I got it in May 09 with 2k on the clock, drove perfect up to Oct 10 when It went for service and MOT.
Drove it back from Renault, bad burning smell, took it back and they said there was no fault. I could see oil leaking all around the coil packs but they said it was cleaning fluid, took it back 2 more times before they admitted it was oil. Apparently they over filled the oil which blew the rocker cover. The first fix attempt by Renault didn't do any good. Second time around a completely new cover and seals fixed it.

Drove good to Dec 10, even though fuel consumption was increased and engine was noisier. Only 10k at this point. Went to start it one morning and it started up fine but as the car was frozen over, I let it sit for a few with the blowers on, went to rev it a bit to get some heat into it and the revs just kept dropping and it stalled, it wouldn't start again without the clutch pressed first (normally it starts with the brake) when I lifted the clutch it stalled straight away, after about 2 hours of faffing with the gearbox and clutch I got it going but it required the force of a hurricane to change gear.

The problem got worse and after a near death experience on the dual carriageway when the gearstick was like a fish in a bucket so took it to Renault in Jan for diagnosis, at this point it had 11k and was just out of warranty.

Took it in at 9am, got a call at 4pm telling me gearbox & clutch were gone £3k to replace them. After a lot of going back and forth they agreed to pay 75% of it but it would take 3 weeks to repair and they had no courtesy car. 1 week later we are suddenly rang and told they were trying to get me a car, later that day I get a call telling me the car had been crashed!?.

After being told that it would take 3 weeks to fix it in the first place and that I couldn't have it back to use while they waited for parts they decided to check the gearbox oil which somehow meant going over 80 miles down the motorway. The bumper, boot and rear supports all had to be changed. They had my car for 2 months total and only compensation offer was that they would take my car off me for £3000 or I could give them it and they would swap it for the same again , used plus 1K. Eventually we settled that they pay for the gearbox 100%.

After all that and it's still not right. A month ago I had the car in reverse and it went forwards.

Anyway, moral of the story, don't buy anything French.

I din't go for the car I mentioned here but rather an 08 1.4TDI ecomotive MK4.
I don't mind the trade off of proper wheels for a 70+MPG fuel consumption. Coming from 30MPG I am thrilled. The free tax is also great as i'm paying £200 a year now.

I picked it up on Friday and am in love, wish I had made the jump sooner.

Wow! This is scary lol, just solidifies why i won't be buying french! Good luck with the new car, how you finding it compared to the renault to drive?
