Leaving the back track as is?

For now - going to try it first - logic being that there is always more weight on the front end in a FWD car and thus, more grip would be a benefit to the front to reduce understeer - usually people mod front drivers to give the rear end less grip to get a more neutral car - this is kind of the same idea

Have the panels and ideas if rear needs widening but not going to do it for cosmetics alone - wider rear = more weight in the car and thus, will only do this if it is necessary

Lots of successful german hillclimb cars only widen the front

Independent rear is an option - I have seen it done quite nicely on a Mk2 golf (not in UK though) kind of a trailing arm setup rather than wishbone - the issue is what the class regulations allow - you can do an awful lot in Mod Prod but change the 'type' of suspension is not allowed - McPherson strut has to stay strut for eg. and could not be changed to double wishbone - rear end has to stay as a beam axle unfortunately - IF it needs modding then it will just get a wider beam axle. The other thing to consider is that independent rear is not always needed on flat surfaces, for rallying yes I can see the benefit of independent wheel travel, but sprinting is genearally on fairly flat stuff - saying that the touring cars have engineered some fantastic "independent" rear beams - with no more joints than a beam axle but with 'flextures' in them - bendy bits of metal, not technically a joint as such to get round the regs - this is what made the astra tourers so dominant a few years back - so even on the flat they may be some benefit if the regs allowed, which they dont....maybe its better ability to jump the curbs, dunno

For the front, I have looked at the passat front suspension - some of them are double wishbone like the honda civic - could be engineered to fit I think, again if the regs allowed

Latest - both front wings are on and inner wings being fabricated - drivers side one finished yesterday, bumper mounts being incorporated into inner wings. Ordered a front bumper as old one was getting a bit beaten and F2 fibreglass one from mOrk was not going to stretch over wider wings - ordered a beauty, F2 looky-likey from Reiger but this is abs plastic so should stretch ok - std plastic one will stretch far enough anyhow

Latest - new water pump fitted (8K+ rpm keeps killing the seals) - 2 parts available from GSF, one for non-abf's and one for abf's, £19 and £24 respectively. The difference.....none visually, GSF tell me the abf one is of higher quality.

Are getting a bit fed up of changing these, and also suspect alternator is spinning too fast also at high revs, so have comissioned a set of underdrive pulleys from the Dutch connection.

Reiger bumper arrived yesterday - nice - black abs plastic - no instructions in english though, a tube of silkaflex, some solvent, a handfull of pop rivets and 2 nuts and bolts......? whatever. Fixings - 2 high up under the grill like std, 2 lower front ones like std not present, big tabs at end to fasten to wheelarch liners. High quality. Fitting starts Sat. £240 delivered.

Fingers crossed painting wings, bonnet and bumper next week......exciting.

Wheels arrive the week after.
