Went to the dealer this morning to settle the deposit on my new baby that I collect next Wednesday, but insisted on a good look round first. Two things hit me straight away:

  • The paint finish looks purple from certian angles
  • Front and rear bumpers are not colour matched very well

Is this normal, I thought it would be black? I also don't think the bumpers should be a different colour - it was very noticable. I've not left the rest of my deposit, and have posted here in need of some advice! Be nice ;)

Inferi black does indeed and is meant to have a purple/aubergine tint to it.

As for the bumpers, doesn't sound good.

I've got a red FR but there is no difference in colour that I can tell.

Hope you get everyting resolved.

Inferi is Spanish for purple.

Actually I just made that up, but if there's anything wrong don't accept the car. They probably crashed it on delivery if the bumpers are different colours.

I think different colours on bumpers has been mentioned before. Certainly I had a MK3 ovni Cupra with slightly different bumpers which was due to the plastic underneath.

I would have thought though with a dark colour that it wouldn't make much difference whether the base material was plastic or metal, but it obviously does as you've found out.

I think there was a girl on here at one point who had a big fight with her dealer for her MK2 having a similar issue amongst some other major things.

Go back and see the car a couple of times and see if the light was playing tricks etc. You never know.

Hope you get it all sorted.

It was in direct sunlight, and it stood out right away. How should I tackle this tomorrow, im gonna go have another look, but I also have to pay my deposit by tomorrow so they can finalise the sale to go ahead for next Wednesday...

Thanks ZBOYD :)

Yours is like it too, you can see it in picture's 002 and 005. It's not discoloured as such, but the plastic bumpers in sunlight just dont look as shiny as the metal bits if you see what I mean. Given the colour used in Inferi Black, in sunlight it looks like they are the wrong colour, but get the car out of the sun and it all looks the same colour.

Consider me convinced, and i'm going back to the steeler tomorrow with my cheque

Where would I be without you guys!

Paint on metal and paint on plastics do have visual differences, lighter flat colours can be very noticeable, darker colours less so. I can see what you mean, but it's not like a sore thumb. You can improve the colour depth with a good polish and wax. 002 and 005 were both taken on the day i got the car and before i'd waxed it.

In some light Inferi Black will appear jet black, sometimes it will look maroon/purple. Sometimes it looks chocolate brown and then when the sun hits it, the red fleck lights up bright red.

Prepare to clean it a lot. :) But that's black cars all over.

Give it a good wash, polish it and then use a good quality wax periodically. It will looks smashing, and make it easier to clean. ;)

The reason for the difference is also caused when panels/bumpers are not painted while fitted to the vehicle. For 2 main reasons, firstly different paint mixes, and secondly the metallic/pearl will lie differently depending how wet it is applied.

I think the difference on ZBOYD's pic 5 is more down to the metallic/pearl.. my FR is the same colour so will no doubt be similar!!

Is yours worse than ZBOYD's pics?

Thanks for tips ZBOYD. Now I remember why my last car wasn't black - because the black beezer FR was to hard to keep shiny! Consider my Sunday afternoons taken up, lol.

Haddock, my car looks the same as ZBOYD's colour wise, but after he washed and waxed his, it was really deep black and glossy. Me and my tub of Dodojuice have some work to do when I get the Leon :) I am still going to take a good long look at the car tomorrow and make sure I am 100% happy with the colour on the bumpers. It does also only appear to be the rear bumper affected at all costs and must be due to the finish or materials used.

I'm also getting to impatient! 3 Days, 9 Hours and 14 Minutes to go untill collection. Not that im counting...

what i cant understand is that you appear surprised that there is a purple tint!
Surely you took some time to decide on the colour when you ordered?

Personally i find they look black mostly, my taste would be for the purple to come through more.

Or maybe the purple they had when the car was first shown. very nice.

There has been a number of thread concerning differences in colour between body and bumpers, however this may be the first on an inferno coloured car.

Unless I wanted to wait for a factory build, the black one was the only colour the dealer had in their network. I really wanted white, but could not wait the 3 months they wanted.

They also didn't have any cars at the steeler in that colour to look at - but black is black and it does look very nice, and they dont do black magic on the cupras :(

I've not noticed a difference on my Cupra between the body and the bumpers. Certain parts are 'normal' black though such as the wing mirrors and parts of the upper door frame (e.g. where the handle for the rear doors is).

Inferi black is a lovely colour when clean. Shows up scratches too easily though, I made the mistake of using a jet wash a couple of times, never again...

The problem with jet washes? It it the brush that damages the car? Or is it the actual power of the water hitting the car?
