ive made sure the clocks are earthed and the 2 lives are there as well , but if i either try temp gauge pin to earth or fuel gauge to earth nothing happernds , ,, but all the gauges rev/speedo/temp/fuel all slightly move when the cluster is powerd up , i carnt understand why there wont move when earthed

you sure the gauges that dont work dont need a 5v control rather than a direct earth... i know my coolant sensor sees a 5v supply... just not sure if thats before or after the gauge
EDIT: my temp gauge doesnt work either btw... typical, but it moves up slightly when ignition is turned on, like what you say yours does...

ive tryed a small currant from the wire to earth still nothing , just moves a bit to the start of the gauge , same applys with the fuel gauge , the clocks are from a 1995 2.8 mk3 vr6 golf , i stripped a old set and i can that there is 4 pins to each of the gauges , what they do is another story , as theres too mutch curcity to trace them ,, double checked the earths and lives , as i said early soon as i plug them into a mk3 golf they work fine , so confuseing why 2pin wires can cause these too problems with the cluster 
if you have a golf to test em on can you not multimeter the wire to see what signal is being sent ? or at least earth it to test the theory ?
was my friends car as he was free on the weekend ,so carnt really keep riping his dash out to check wireing ,
its head thashing why 2 single wires dont move when there earthed ,i evern wired the fuel sender unit as that only has one earth one varible 12v live and still nothing i, think i will have to not bother with them and try buying 2 after market gauges and re wire them into the centre consol of the dash ,as i thought with seeing the pin outs on the otherforium , they would work , ,if anyone has a possible daigram or pin out were they the how the hell the wireing is suposed to work from the 2temp and fuel pins ,it would be very greatfull

on my test jig I have a resistor going to ground to get the gauges to move, If I remeber right they would not move if I just grounded them. When I am back at work tomorrow I will check what the value of them is and post back with the results.
really ,,, ill be over the moon if this is the problem , as i kjnow i had to use a resitor from my clocks via my standalone ecu to work /ps if all goes well , could u let me know how this would be wired to work

- it will sort it one way or anotheras i tryed it contected with the sensors with no joy , ive then just tryed the 2 pins diect from the clocks with inline resistors then putting them to earth still nothing , only thing i dint try was adding a 12v supply after the resistor , which i didnt wont to risk any damage to the clocks tbh ,,,,and yearh they work fine plugd into the standard mk3 golf vr6 fusebox loom, as i assumed long as the clocks had the main power and earths , the others would be wired up direct to the sensors/ ie 2wires for temp 2 wires for fuel ,2 earths/and the 2 pin sensor pins may have been live , but with not havin no joy somethings just not right , evern thow i feel im close , with everyone help ,,how short is the pin wire ? through the loom or a direct connection ?

hi guys yes still stuck regards the 2 gauges on the mk3 vr6 clocks which wont work ive found this wireing daigram but as its a pdf im insure how to load it , heres the link and half way down ull see a english version mk3 golf 1995 when it opens its shows how he gauges are wired but i dont really understand whats what and how its wired can anyone care to look and possible explain

Sorry for digging an old thread up but just want to double check something.
Is it definetely the red/black or black/green wire that goes into the clocks that provides the tachosignal, as stated at the bottom of the first post?

how come?
Still got my aftermarket rev counter to fit and I have finally got some motivation get it fitted. So I thought that if the tacho signal wire is already there I could use that as it is easier etc and the reading will be coming from the ECU.
ah cool cool... you could use that if itll let you, or theres a wire on the coil you can use too
Im going to try and use the one that goes to the clocks first just for ease etc. Hopefully that will work, if it doesnt then I will just run the wire to the coil instead.
