Insurance for Mk2s with engine transplants...

Try Adrian Flux mate as they are pretty reasonable when it comes to things like engine transplants or very heavy modifications.

Declare it, or get your self an 8v GTI, they are cheap enough these days and insurance probably wont be any more then your quoted £800 either

I'd declare it. If you don't, won't they realise in your MOT when they check your chassis number, etc. ?

my conversion is declared with DVLA and insurance company

last mot it still came up as a 2.0 16v on the ministry gas analyser

If it was me i wouldn`t bother with the hassel. If your taking out a 1.4 put back a 1.4 it`s not like your going to notice that much difference performance wise, i would understand if you intended to put a 20v turbo lump etc in plus wouldn`t it screw up your resale value if/when you want to sale it.

buying a new car is not an option due to the amount of money i will lose on the 1.4! cnt bleve how quickly the noise has got worse! wen i bought it in december it was jus a very slight tappet noise which dissapeared after 30 secs! now it is unbearable at start up! sooooo F****N lame!!!

been offered a very good deal for a 1.6 engine tho so its either that from a trusted source or buy one which could be dodgy from a scrappy

im puttin a corrado g60 in my 95 ibiza im not even gonna bother trying to insure it and i'll just use it as a track car ! but i wudn't bother with puttin a 1.6 in a 1.4 as you wont feel much diffo tbh either go extreme with your engine swap orrrr spend the money you would on a new engine and to uprate everything like brakes and tht and spend it on repairing the 1.4

don't bother, i never declared anything on my previous 8 valve, had coilies, k & n, full exhaust system, power boost valve, speakers, etc. anyway a girl smashed into the back of me, wrote it off, the engineer guy came to look at it, i poo'es my pants thinking he'd say i wasn't liable for any money etc, but he didn't even bother to look under the bonnet! when i got it taken away i claimed 'you can't drive it as the clutch is snapped' the real reason was i took the induction kit off, half the fuel rail as i ruined it taking my power boost valve off. and so they towed it away, once again not even bothering to check i was telling the truth. so i got the insurance money and bought a newer 8 valve the moral of the story is all the insurance companys care about is money! if you don't declare your mods they don't care. if you do declare them they say 'ha ha look we got more money out of them! they fell for the mod trap!' so i would just not bother! unless your your doing a turbo jobby, or a 2 liter jobby then yeah i would!

by the way if you don't belive me ask alex, the guy who's posted the 'cupra gti project' other wise known as fenix, as it was his girlfriend that wrote my car off!

Haha, I've got a green induction kit on my ibiza and was quoted an extra £350 on top of my insurance for the last 8 months of it!! That's like 500 for the full year!


I'm just curious, if I do write off my car am I allowed to say "I'd like to have it taken to my garage of choice (My best friend's Dad's garage) as blah blah <some excuse of trusting him and him knowing my car?>"

Or would that not work?


Jaketalbot: Problem is, if you have a bad day where the engineer had an argument with his with or the insurance company is in a bad mood then they may just make an example out of you..

yeah thats true mate, i've declared on my insurance my mods now, as not going to chance it agian! but it's easy to take a induction kit off, and put the standard one on for the 'inspection' so why not do that! but they won't be able to tell the differnce between the two engines, i don't think for one minute they'd bother looking into it that much. but to be fair if i was to have an engine transplant i'd go bigger than 1.6, i'd buy a cupra or put a written off cupra sport 8 vlave engine in, then i would, as i said, definatley declare it! i just hate insurance! and ill do anything to get out of paying toooooo much!

It's just sad when your insurance cost more than 3 times the cost of your car! Think I'll have to wait until I'm 19 with 2 years NCB before getting my Cupra..


Any idea on choosing the garage the car goes to for the inspection then?

personally i'd stick the old 1.4 timing belt cover on it (label on it) and carry on enjoying cheap tax etc etc

anyone asks deny all knowledge and dont go selling it "new engine fitted"

Well after getting ridiculous quotes even with specialist insurers i have decided to book the car into the stealers and get them to tell me whats wrong with it (Dont worry they wont be fixing it!).
I checked what my insurance would be this year without making the change and it was £500 less so may as well pay 500 to get the thing fixed! I wouldnt sleep at night if i didnt tell the insurance firm!

mmmmm jus got a call from the stealers n they reckon its a distorted manifold and a snapped stud which is causing the noise. Not too sure myself as it gets quicker as i rev it and sounds like its inside the engine... any1 got any ideas?

im gona get em to show me exactly how they no this and also ask sum questions n see if their explanations seem reasonable. They quoted me 250 quid to fix which is steep for a new manifold so will keep u posted with wot happens!

i think it needs reminding that hes swapping the engine to fix a problem engine and not for increased power or whatever...

Id just put it in if you couldnt tell the difference and leave at as thats how you bought it

Beware cheap insurance - as with all insurance, it's all too easy to see it as a waste of money until you need to claim on it. And that's where you'll find the cost savings have been made.

It took Adrian Flux in excess of two years to resolve a non-fault claim I made with them - but because it wasn't settled, the accident was treated as a fault incident at insurance renewal time and my premiums suffered as a result. Now, being out of pocket to the tune of my excess for a couple of years was bad enough, but if I'd dcided to save a bit of cash and gone for a Third Party policy I'd have been substantially further out of pocket. I swore I'd never use Fluxes since as once they'd taken my cash they were absolute though to be fair I usually still give them a call for a quote and they're usually cheapest. So I just cite that premium when other insurers ask what the best quote I've had is and it gives a bit more leverage to gt the price down.

Think the manifold is a red herring! ad a look with my housemate and manifold altho snapped on one side is not visibly vibrating on the block when the throttle is pushed and its makin the tapping noise.
I am gona get another 'local' garage to look at it tomo. Will keep u posted as to what they find!!

Some good news pepz! (u may not be bothered but hey!)

Took it to my "is he local?!" garage and as soon as i flipped the hood and turned it on he said yep thats the bolt thats snapped off on the manifold and the air forcing out makes it sound like a tappy noise! SOOOOOOO Pleased!!!

He said if he can get the old studs out of the cylinder head easily should only charge me 35-40 quid!!!!!!!!!! Now i can go ahead and spend the money on lowering it etc!!! im gona order a front splitter to celebrate!

That's good to hear mate. Its great when you think its gonna be something expensive and it only end up costing a lot less. But the problem is when its the other way around, so you think you've snapped a bolt..................and find out you need a new engine
