I hadn't heard of this problem before with VAG engines, but I know, from experience, it is very common with Vauxhall engines. My old vectra was cutting out coming up to junctions, revs just dropping and engine stopping completely. This was due to a blocked breather pipe pipe to the throttle body. My astra did it aswell but it was only a common egr fault.
I know VAG and Vauxhall engines are very different so its probably of no use to you guys but i'd thought I'd let you know just in case. hope it helps
