the 36.9mpg was with the trips reset and the engine was hot i have never known any thing like it time for a nice single malt the answer might be in the bottom of the glass i love the car but i will not keep it if this is what it is going to do on fuel
phil
My 143 ST does 40-45 average and over 50 on a run at 75-80mph.

I can get it down to 30mpg if I thrash it - but you may have a deeper issue, have you had the engine map checked?

Mines a 2010. According to computer .......

I get 36mpg in stop start traffic with cold engine to get 9 miles to work in morning
I managed to get 50mpg really trying hard to save fuel on an A road longer run (wasn't enjoyable at all !)
Coming back from Manchester to lakes I got 43mpg going 85 - 90 on m6 and then A roads for an hour.

They are not good town cars at all IMO.

My 1.9 pd supra Tdi 150 was at least + 10 in all the categories above

It's cold so it will run richer, driving style makes a HUGE impact on mpg! I have been in the car with no end of folks who think they are a good driver for fuel and they aren't! Mpg driving is a skill and requires discipline! Tyre pressures? Up them a couple of psi over what seat say. Also if you have done loads of town driving before the motorway then it will spend all the time on the motorway your crusing reg generating the dpf again lowering mpg..

Eco mode on the air on turned on??

Also don't expect to match the official figures! They are not realistic at all, I know most of the legal tricks and tips to getting good figures as I have witnessed fuel economy test for type approval as part of my job..

Yes 36 does seem a bit low, but I would prob put most of it down to driving style and other factors rather than a problem.. Also don't forget the exeo is not light! My 170 st sport tech is 1700kg on our weigh bridge at work! A octavia or Leon are a couple hundred kg lighter!

Block half your radiator off with a bit of cardboard. The car heats up a lot better. gives better fuel economy. Just don't forget to take it back out when the temperature rises again.

Whoa! Do whaa??? Aha I would not advise this at all? For a start you can't block 'half of the radiator off as it has a top hose and a bottom hose and inside are passages and veins. Secondly I most definitely wouldn't use cardboard if I were going to block any radiator off as within a matter of miles most of it will have disintegrated and you would have pulp and crap floating around your coolant system not to mention the detrimental effect it will have as far as overheating goes... DO NOT DO THIS lol

I did just this with a large, flexible plastic chopping board. Looked like it belonged there. It made no difference what-so-ever. Waste of a chopping board. Thankfully, my good lady has not noticed yet :D

This is an old trick, he means place cardboard in front of the rad to block the air flow through it... However it works not by keeping the rad from cooling the water down as no coolant should be flowing through it due to the stat being closed until the engine reaches temp, it works by restricting air into the engine bay which helps raise the engine bay temps to keep the engine block warm, it can work when it's really really cold! But use tin foil instead of card, but its very hard to do on modern cars due to the rads being all hidden behind body work unlike old cars like the London black cabs etc,

Also blocking the air through the engine bay may cause odd handling at higher speeds, due to the change in airflow paths affecting the aerodynamics

Hi Guy's,

Just done a London trip, covered 555 miles and brimmed it 48.3 l so works out at 52.3 mpg 75-80 mph, it's getting better with more mileage covered, on a side note mfd reads 52.0 mpg, so that's pretty accurate.

Now I'm getting jealous. Mines just dropped below 45 :( Damned cold weather.

Just to add to this, Ive got a manual 143 se tech, 12 reg.
The trip computer at the moment reads 42mpg average over 3500 ish miles, which i guess isnt too bad.
Id say that was around 70% motorway and rest in various town driving.

When i use it for work i get between 25 to 32 mpg with start/stop traffic, however its only a short trip of around 4 miles so it doesnt even get warm.

the most ive ever seen in town was 39.9 driving like miss daisy at midnight with no traffic and mostly green lights.

Motorway driving I get very inconsistent results, ive driven from north devon to se london and managed 57mpg average.
Ive also driven from Edinburgh to se london again and only got 47mpg.

I generally drive between 60-70mph with cruise control, i have tried to do it manually but i struggle to beat the computer at this.

I must admit i love the car to bits but the engine seems very poor, my last car was a 2009 leon fr 170, which would get a consistent 35 to 50mpg in town and 50 to 62mpg motorway driving.

One thing to note, my leon, the trip computer did not calculate the average mpg when at a standstill, however i noticed the exeo computer does, which i guess is more accurate, which also would explain the differences in the lower than expected town driving mpg, being stopped for even 30 seconds my mpg can drop from 35 to 33 dependant how long you've been driving for of course.

36mpg sounds low to me, but it depends upon you're driving style and typical journey?

My trip 2, which I only occasionally reset, is normally 46mpg and that's a 170, with a remap - which made no difference to mpg. My car has now done 40k miles.

my brother has a PD160 Ibiza with a gtb2260vk on it running low power due to needing a new head but still running 225bhp and he gets 29-30mpg kicking the crap out of it and easy 50+ getting near 60mpg when driving like miss daisy.

and this is the old 1.9PD
The older 1.9 pd engines where better on fuel than these more moden engines.

But I have got to say there is no chance his car pulls out nealry 60mpg even driving very softly.

My pd 150 used to see a good 47mpg as a overall average on a run 52mpg driving like miss daisy never ever seen 60 at all

I could get over 70mpg average from my PD150 Toledo, but that had 250rpm lower top gear RPM and was 200kg lighter.

Is that what your computer says or what you've calculated by filling up? I only ask as, since having mine remapped, it quotes inaccurate figures by about 5mpg.

I'll let you know after the weekend - I filled up yesterday, and reset the odometer, and both computers and I will fill up again after a planned long run on Sunday and work out the real MPG.
