Has anyone been watching the series on BBC2?

This week he decided to make his own bio-diesel.

Im not interested in "how" he made it, as there is loads of data on this all over the place.

What I AM interested in, is that he went to a chippy and picked up some old oil and took it home.
I was pretty sure this was illegal to do without a licence?

Can anyone confirm this? And chippy owners?

Surely it can't be illegal, its only cooking all. People buy it all the time in Tesco's. It did say at the end that he paid the duty on it so I can't see why it would be illegal.

Just done a bit of digging ... and it looks like you DO need a licence to remove/transport used oil from any comercial premises.

It's like a waste removal licence.

If he's collecting it to use as fuel though then surely it's no longer considered waste.

this is why we get so much tipped into the sewerage system from food outlets.
you need to be licenced to remove it ,this means ou have to pay for the licence,this inturn means you have to charge to take it away.
which means i get free kebabs each time i go down town for a sheesh

You have to really filter the waste oil as well, obviously you need to let gordon know exactly how much your using I mean he gets hardly any taxes on fuel does he..

Im fine with that.... I can "sort" that out. Im bothered about two things.

One if being done over for carrying the oil, and having my licence damaged
and the other being my insurance on my garage

Not everyone does that you know...

no some responsible people have grease/oil traps
they just tip that straight into the sewerage system when its full

That's a pretty good point.

That is "propably" what is boild down to. Plus if you throw a carboard box in a field, after a while it will rot/degrade.... but if you throw oil away, or pour if down a drain, it can casue big issues.

That and they dont want to loose the cash from the possibility of you using it as fuel :w4nk:ers

I believe some takeaway places are quite keen for DIY bio producers to take oil off their hands, as otherwise they have to pay to get rid.

I doubt anyone would worry over the odd can of chip fat going walkies.

The bigger danger is getting done for not paying duty on the bio you use, but there is no way they can tell how MUCH you've used is there....

See I aggree with that. The chippies have to PAY to have it taken away, so im sure they would not mind, or rather prefer to have someone take it away for free.

And I also aggree on the "Usage" issue. Just gotta get the kit together

Like I said ... there are loads of places about for info on making the stuff, it's all the laws and stuff I want to be sure of, so I can from them when needed

Nope. It's your waste then, the shops have provided you with packaging.
The oil thing is a bit of a grey area I'd have thought. If you are transporting it for disposal then it is waste, if you are transporting it for usage then it should be a product.
