Im thinking bout gettin a new car, also thinking that perhaps a jap import...does any1 know what the insurance is like, as in if its cheaper or more expensive than any other non jap car?

Basically its a minefield - huge number of variables, make, model, UK spec or jap import, modifications, your age, postcode, driving history etc etc. One thing very likely - you'll be paying a lot more against your present car. As an example I pay around £400 to insure a Cupra TDI and just under a grand for an Evo VIII MR320. Some insurance companies won't insure you at any price if you don't have some history of driving/ownership of high performance cars.

Telford ay it...
My old mans got an mr2, not an import though. Parts are still stupidly priced and not many garages will work on it. And his insurance is quite high for what it is.

Never got as far as insuring one but I was thinking of going down the Scooby route

If your seriously interested try Litchfield Imports as they seem pretty reputable (I stand to be corrected)

Evo use their cars for tests on a regular basis

Have also heard that some dealers won't deal with them (imports)though. Prob a case of getting the importer to service etc

Jap Imports have both pros and cons:

PROS:
Jap imports tend to be in better condition and than uk cars. Firstly the japs dont use salt on the roads like we do = no rust. And because driving is very expensive there, the cars dont get used as much. I should know, i bought myself a celica gt4 st185 uk spec, and a mate bought the same but jap import. He still has his and working fine, mine died a year later.
Jap imports usually come with better specs than uk versions-more electric goodies/more bhp etc..

CONS: Insurance is a joke, where my policy on the above car cost £800ish tpft,
my mate was shelling out double that, tbh i belive it was alot more than double! And forget about trying to get any work done on the car, big garages wont touch em with a barge pole.- There is a garage called J.E.M (Japanese Engine Management) local to me who did some work on my car when my timing belt snapped and they wouldn't go near my mates celica!

Anyway, what car were you looking at?

another one for the list Russo :

Pros:

japanese emissions regulations are incredibly tight so most cars are the kiss of death after 30/40k hence heathrow engine centre doing so well

plus

most jap fuel stations even recycle/replace the engine oil whilst they fill the tank up - pipe straight in the dipstick

Cons:

a lot of saudi/south african crooks realised its a pretty good way to disguise a stolen motor with the papers and obvious distances involved so be wary of a cheap but top notch car - heard of more than a few turn out to be stolen lately

Very true! I didnt know about the oil trick tho. As for the crooks, oh yes, well documented. I've also heard of cars for sale that have been used in drift/street races, heavily damaged and then just patched up and flogged to unsuspecting foreigners.

Snakebite, if you were only after an mx5, theres no point looking abroad, you'll probably find one here and its a lot less hassle.

If you fancy the 106 gti why not look for a Rallye or an XSi? Plenty fast enough with group 6 insurance and the handling will put most other cars to shame. Just don't crash it.
