I'm also getting rust on the insides, as if the pad isn't making contact with the disc in a few places

Mine are like that. There is ring about an inch wide on the outside of the discs. Seems a bit odd. I would have thought the pads would be the same width as the discs!

Apart from the obvious - rust - what's causing this?

my ibiza's was the same. it happens, stamping on the brakes from high speed -> 0 repeatedly clears it.

don't get this in the S4, but then had new front + rear brakes in august, and 6500 miles later, need new fronts + rears.
(not quite worn out, but need before ring trip in May)
