So my Clutch Master Cylinder broke about 6 weeks ago, but with holiday and other commitments last month I didn't manage to get round to taking it to a garage till Friday last week.

They got the master cylinder replaced and I picked the car up last night and took it for a 30mile spin (it had been sat in my office car park for the previous 6 weeks so wanted to give it a fairly good run) and everything seemed to be running well and the car felt fine.

On the way home from work tonight I thought I took off from a red light and put my foot to the floor and then the engine warning light came on... DOH!

Since then it ran very rough; quite strong vibrations when in neutral; I managed to drive it home the final couple of miles but it felt super rough, didn't feel like it had much power and the light flashed intermittently; I didn't accelerate fast as didn't want to cause any further damage.

Since getting home and checking the forum, I'm taking a logical guestimation that one of my coil pack's has gone. How can I test this? I don't have a VAG Com and I don't really want to drive it as it is.

If it is my coil pack, which one is recommended to buy? and should I replace all 4?

Thanks.

Nope... There was no odd smell at any point after the car started running rough.

I was sat at about 2k rev's driving behind a slow lorry which turned left leaving a clear road so I put my foot to the floor when the light started flashing and the power was no where near what it usually is... after that it started to run very rough... I guess you could describe it as chugging rather than purring.

Just tried that; I just went for a 1 mile drive with the MAF sensor unplugged and no difference, still running slightly rough, just accelleration doesn't feel very smooth and taking off in 1st feels like it will stall so have to give it a bit of extra gas or dip the clutch a bit.

Will have to see if anyone I know has a VAG Com (need to buy one myself)!

Sounds like a cp mate. Same happend to me. Not quite sounding like a scooby but still rough. Like a small missfire wen planting the foot, and mine didnt smell at all, which lead me to believe it was somthing else...but no, it was a coilpack. I get my coilpacks from gsf car parts mate, alot cheaper than the stealers. I jus tried each 1 until it was spot on again. Take you about 20 mins to do, or 2 mins if you guess the right 1 first time :)

Thanks guys... Luckily a colleague of mine who has a Golf had a VAG Com cable in his car so kindly lent me it

Connected it up to the car and read 4 fault codes:

VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.1
Friday, 05 August 2011, 09:14:49.
Control Module Part Number: 1ML 906 032
Component and/or Version: 1.8l R4/5VT 0001
Software Coding: 10510
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
VCID: FE8FFDFBE9F9
Additional Info: VSSZZZ1MZ3R103472 SEZ7Z0B1891110
4 Faults Found:
16712 - Knock Sensor 1 (G61): Signal too High
P0328 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16684 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
P0300 - 35-00 - Please Register/Activate
16685 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
P0301 - 35-00 - Please Register/Activate
16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too Low
P0102 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

I'm fairly certain the last code (16486) is because I unplugged the MAS sensor last night. I cleared the above codes then fired up the engine and took it for a short drive round the block and re-checked for fault codes; got these:

VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.1

Control Module Part Number: 1ML 906 032
Component and/or Version: 1.8l R4/5VT 0001

Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
VCID: FE8FFDFBE9F9
Additional Info: VSSZZZ1MZ3R103472 SEZ7Z0B1891110
2 Faults Found:
16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0300 - 35-00 - -
16685 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
P0301 - 35-00 - Please Register/Activate

Fault codes page (from this forum) states:

16685 P0301 Cyl.1 Misfire Detected

From this I'm taking a logical guess that either the spark plug or the coil pack is not working on that cylinder.

to test for coilpacks:

have the engine running and idling, and look at the injector rail. unplug injector 1 (drivers side or the most left hand one if your infront of the car) and if the car goes to stall or goes even more lumpy, that coilpack works

if nothing happens at all then that coilpack is faulty.

Once you have tested number one... plug it back in and give it a second or two and try number two.

Rinse and repeat :)

I managed to get the cover off the engine and saw the coil packs but coils 3 and 4 are obstructed by a bracket thing on top and I don't have the tool (socket) needed to get it out of the way to unplug those coils.

However, I did manage to disconnect coil pack 1 and no difference, engine still spluttering a bit, but after disconnecting coil pack 2 the engine started to splutter quite heavily.

My logical guess (limited engine knowledge) is that the coil pack 1 has gone which caused the fault on the knock sensor when we first did a fault diagnosis this morning (which from what I've read, the knock sensor controls engine timing, therefore a miss firing cylinder would cause this some troubles).

I just rang the seat dealership and they have some coil packs in stock (£36 inc. VAT) so I'll head down there and replace coil pack 1 and hopefully (fingers crossed) that will fix it!!! ...At least that way I'll have a 12 month guaranteed warranty on the part if it does go again!

Thanks again for your help :)

i didnt say the coilpacks themselves mate i said the injectors... between the actual engine and the inlet... theres four.

Should take literally seconds to unclip.

try them all first.

They are under the arrows.

one at a time... just to ensure its cylinder one and not more than one pack.

I had this same problem on an audi a4 and traced the problem to no 1 cylinder. I bought a new coil pack and fitted it and fired the car up and the bugger was still misfiring. After more investigation and testing the ignition module on the air box (golfs have them but not sure about the leon's) the no. 1 cylinder output on the module had failed.

Try swapping no.1 and no.2 coilpacks around and see if the misfire changes cylinder. If not then it'll be time for a new module as i had to buy on my A4.
