K1 bumper damage- advice needed please folks!

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone could throw their thoughts/opinions into the mix on how best to go about fixing some damage to my K1's front bumper...

I was driving home yesterday on the dreaded A9 through the Highlands (in a typical Scottish winter blizzard!) and the c**k in front of me decided he'd hit his brakes suddenly for no apparent reason... :confused: I hit a patch of ice as I braked, so had to steer off the road onto the embankment rather than lose my NCB by stoving into the back of him! Long story short- the combination of a crash barrier and two feet of snow at the side of the road has chipped and cracked the paintwork on my front bumper, popped the grille out, and broken off a 10-inch long piece of the bottom of the bumper:

Luckily I was only doing 30mph at the time, or it could've been a lot worse. I've managed to clip the grille back into place, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do about the paintwork/broken piece of bumper without having to resort to a new bummper plus the inevitable paint spray...???

Would touch-up paint be a reasonable solution (bearing in mind there's also a 6-inch long crack in the paint running along the ridge under the fog light)? If so, am I right in thinking that the paint code for Inferi Black is W9V?

Also, if you look closely at the second pic, you can see the hole in the bottom of the bumper through the mesh. I'm not particularly happy that it's exposed the radiator to the road surface, which is the main reason why I'm considering biting the bullet & ordering a new bumper... I've still got the piece that was broken off (last pic) but it looks pretty irrepairable to me, unless you guys can suggest anything?

Any advice would be massively appreciated!
 
There was an add in Autosport Mag about Plastic Welding.

They graft the broken bit back into place with the machine.

Might be worth a visit to WH Smiths to have a look.

Still might need a quick blow over im sorry to say
 
i would be tempted to just get a local repair done on what's visible, shouldn't be more than £75

Cheers Karl, will look into that thanks. Gotta be cheaper than replacing the whole thing!

Yeah the more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards a touch-up of the paintwork and a bit of plastic welding as suggested by Karl. There's no mechanical damage so I can afford to patch it up for the time being at least, and consider a new bumper once the post-Christmas financial lull is over with! There are actually a few more cracks along the underside that I didn't notice in the dark last night when I had a look at the damage, so I think it will need to be replaced at some point unfortunately :cry:

On the plus side, at least it isn't also due a new cambelt and two front tyres. Oh, hang on... [:@]

No doubt you'll have people jumping to conclusions saying you were too close to the car in front, but I know exactly what you mean. it's always old grannys just slowing down for no reason what so ever lol "oh dear, there's a slight bend in the road, I'll have to slam my brakes on"

Yeah I was expecting that to be honest! But no I wasn't in the wrong, 30mph and a good safe distance between us (hence the fact that he was able to stop and I wasn't- he'd obviously cleared the ice!)

no worries mate I had one of my cars repaired in the same way around 5 years ago dealer wanted £600 for a new bumper smart repair was £95 all in took them less than half a day and it was dam near perfect well I couldn't tell where it was :)
 
not quite as bad as yours had a 4 inch crack from the bottom up and some deep gouging (hit a rock used as a driveway marker)

the gouges had to be filled but the rest was welded plus it was BMW metallic paint so needed lacquer as well as paint
I also had a small leather repair in that price too but sure prices will have gone up so would have thought just the bumper should come in under a ton

Yeah I've got that big piece that needs welding back on, plus about 4 or 5 cracks ranging from 1-6 inches long, plus obviously the paintwork. I'm expecting it'll be at least a couple of hundred, but even that is far better than the hit I'd take for a new bumper & spray...

Hahaha! I know mate, tried busting my balls about my car again the other day and I told him straight that he hasn't got a leg to stand on whilst his daily drive is a convertible fiat 500! Didn't look too impressed which made it even more satisfying!;)
