Kerbed diamond cut alloy!

They just dont add up for me. They cost about half as much as diamond cut alloy insurance, assuming you fit them yourself. If you do kerb the alloy the alloygater is often ruined, and may not even protect the wheel anyway, plus fine grit can get underneath and ruin the finish.

My insurance covers large diamond cut alloys and is £199 for 3 years cover. I can claim 6 times a year with no excess. If the wheel is a write-off they will pay £200 towards a new one.

That’s a really clever insurance policy as you can only refurb a diamond cut alloy so many times before they just have to be fully powder coated, especially if you give the kerb a good bash...

So far in the 6 months since owning my cupra (and having the alloys refurbed) I’ve not got a scratch, avoid kerbs like the plague and enjoy those beauties.

Amen to that 'avoid curb like the plague.' Funny how when I parallel park, I'm always at least double the distance from the kerb than others...I only really 'force' myself to park closer only if my opposite wheel is outside the white line on the other side.

I parked close but if your reversing in I don’t get how you can go wrong, especially with the mirror folding down when in reverse. Lovely wee aid. :)

I had a Leon, Ibiza, and now currently Volvo V40. The Seats had no reversing sensors, the V40 has sensors and camera, none of the cars have the 'dipping' mirror. The camera with 'guide lines' are most useful, but I often chicken out, even though if I follow the guidelines I actually haven't touched the curb yet.

For some reason I find the Leon much easier to park safely away from kerbs than my previous Astra K. One possible reason is that the mirrors dip down a lot further on the Leon, actually being useful for seeing the kerb.

Did this this morning on the way to Park run, I knew the rain was a sign I should have stayed in bed. So gutted, just a split second of impatience in a car park is going to cost me.

Looking for decent wheel repair in south Leicestershire now anyone know any where? People have recommended wheel specialist, their site quoted £150 for a 19" diamond cut wheel. I'll give them a ring instead.

That's easily repairable with some polishing stones and clear lacquer, I damaged the same area but longer and you couldn't tell after

Really? Sounds like the kind of thing where I'd end up making it worse Do you have links to the materials you used? I've never used polishing stones, is it hand polished? What lacquer?

I got them from work unfortunately, it's really easy to do, you just need a few in different grades starting with the roughest working down the smoothest, as for the lacquer I just used the one that came with the touch up pen for the paint on the car, £10 max I'd say

because there are 2 faces on the lip there is only 2 ways 2 to get the double profile back, either fill it and blow a little silver paint in (quite effective as well) or have it welded/diamond cut and then refinished. if you simply flat it down through various grades you won't get that double profile back.

these are not the easiest of wheels to keep mint, I dread the day if I ever kerb one of my copper R wheels! I just avoid parking next to kerbs or park on them.

At least the R wheels are cheaper to buy new by about half! Only cost just over £300 a wheel, for some reason the standard wheels cost double! And you don't have the diamond cut corrosion issues either. If it wasn't for the ET difference and having to change my insurance I'd have bought some. I hate diamond cut wheels.

how are they not diamond cut? they look to be diamond cut then anodised somehow, I wouldn't like to try and repair one that's for sure.. £300 a wheel is still expensive.

The copper coloured R wheels are diamond cut. They have a coloured tint applied to the lacquer coat to give them the copper coloured finish.

They’ll be just as susceptible to white worm corrosion as ‘normal’ diamond cut alloys, and I dare say they’ll also be more expensive to refurbish than a normal diamond cut finish because of the tinted lacquer coating.

Makes no sense why they cost half the price then. VAG and their random pricing at its best.
Glad I didn't buy them now!

My Candy red honda motorbike had red tinted lacquer on top of a chrome base coat to give it the metallic look rather than flaked of metallic material in the paint. It wasn't cheap to paint match when some idiot knocked my bike over as the colour darkens with each layer so it's a pain in the ass for the repair shop. So I definitely understand how that will be an awful job to repair. Having seen the wheels on the Cupra Ateca and R ST I thought they were just painted, hence me thinking they weren't diamond cut.

Plus is by some miracle you did make it worse you could just get the refurb done anyways
I'd love to know more about the technique, you might think it's dead straight forward . What polishing stone? I've never used them before.

They’re the same price to get done, I had the option to have the tint applied to mine when getting done.

Where was that? I was thinking of having my standard wheels done in Copper but so far only found places that paint them and it's not quite the same colour.

The wheel specialist, one I use is Cumbernauld but they have branches all over. I seen them with a copper wheel in their showroom so had to ask how is was done.
