Knocking noise - changing gear/bumps

My missus' Ibiza 130tdi is making a horrible knocking noise when either changing gear or going over bumps, especially sleeping policemen.

Seems worse when its cold. Sounds like its coming from underneath the gearbox tunnel. Its also seems to be worse when changing from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. You can also make the knocking noise by releasing accelerator pedal and pressing on it to give some engine revs, then back off, then reapply. And so on...

Could it be the gear linkage, clutch, or dog bone mount. other engine mount?

Would a dealer look at it for us? Would they charge or happy to just "quote"?

best to get the car up on a ramp n check the engine mount first, then get a car tetiscope(i cant spell) with the engine running place under the gearbox to check

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but these are the exact symptoms my car has. I've only had it a month (although it is six yeas old), was wondering if you ever found out what the issue was, or if anyone else has any suggestions?

I noticed it was worse (louder) when cold, but still present as the car warms up.

Its still under warranty with the garage i got it from so will be going to them to sort out but I'd like to have some sort of idea before I get there, don't want to get fobbed off!

Oh, hi BTW, first post!

Wants new dogbone mount ( 6Q0 199 851 AT) around £30 quid
Also check cambelt side mount as these are known to wear quite quick

Cam belt was replaced with all the tensioners as part of the deal. Possible that something hasn't been tightened properly there?

Thinking its more likely to be the dog bone mount though as a result.

Thanks for the response.

For anyone else who happens to be searching for this problem, mine turned out to be the suspension bushes.

Check track rods as well, recently had mine replaced to cure a knocking noise on bumps/ruff surfaces

From what I can tell the bushes has solved it. The ride is night and day since the were changed as well.

Bumps weren't giving a knock originally, I was getting a knock on and off the accelerator originally, which was starting to develop more and occasionally made a similar noise when I hit a roundabout or speed bump.

Will keep an eye on it though.

Knocking Noise!!!

Same as mine and pretty much any other VAG group vehicle (Ibiza, POLO Fabia etc...) any knocking from the front end noticable at any speed even when stationary, even just depressing the clutch caused it on mine, then it will more than likely be the front suspension bottom wishbone bushes.
This has been covered on other threads as I started one earlier this year and got some great help and advice.
The bushes them selves cost in the region of £15 to £25 and alot of members suggest fitting cupra spec bushes £??? Labour is about 3 hours and would advise tracking when work completed.

I was quoted from £150 from a local VAG independant, SEAT dealer quoted around £200+ another VAG independant quoted £250 + VAT, a govvie price in the region of £50 was also quoted to me.

But in the end took it to local Skoda dealer (£180) as could guarantee loan car at no extra cost!

Ring around and don't be afraid to haggle on price!!

Well my lower suspension bushes were replaced a week ago. I've still got the issue, although greatly reduced.

I no longer get the knock when coming off of the accelerator, but do if changing gear, mainly 1 to 2 or 2 to 3. Reverse also does it. Dog bone mount was checked last time and is apparently ok. Will be taking it back in, but any suggestions?

Hi,
Did you get a fix for this?
My 2011 ibiza 1.6tdi knocks when changing gear 1st to 2nd, and same knocking when slight acceleration or deceleration.. both front lower arms have been changed recently..
Regards,
John

I've checked the mountings, they're all right.
I have noticed that there is a lot of play in the right driveshaft into the inner cv joint, much more than in the left..
Also, the driveshafts are fastened to the gearbox diff by 6 bolts - if these come loose it would make the knocking noise too (and eventually the driveshaft would break free..)

All or most sources of knocking noises appearing with the car's age should have been removed from the later versions of this model, ie the 6J onwards cars have different front suspension design.

Engine mounts been covered
Lower wishbone mounts on non Cupras - fit Cupra ones
Drop links on ARB
Top mounts on struts - bearings go but mostly it is the "twang" as the spring jumps when turning the wheel when parking
ARB bushes is another one - I had a rattle for years until I final twig it was these.

Use bumps to isolate if it is suspension - one wheel on a pothole and a noise means something on that wheel and or that ARB (anti roll bar). If it does not occur if going over a ridge like a sleeping policeman then it will be ARB as if both wheels get the same bump the ARB does no work. Hope that makes sense.
