When I reverse I get a knock or rubbing noise from under the car around the handbrake gearstick area of the car. Only when reversing, not going forwards

Almost like something banging or rubbing on the chassis, but like an oscillating noise.

Looked under the car and cant see anything making contact when it shouldnt...

Any ideas.

It might be the exhaust because of the torque movement from the engine when in reverse. Get someone to have a look at the engine while you hold the car on the biting point in reverse to see if the movement is excessive. Could have a worn engine mount. Other thing could be the heatshield but I would expect that going forwards to.

Thanks for the reply, I thought the heatshield at first but then its hasnt got that tinny vibration to it. Its more of a thud thud.

Daft question but where are the engine mounts located?

I think it's one at the back drivers side, one at the front sort of in the middle and one on the gear box somewhere. I'm not totally sure about the petrol cars but if you see to much movement it shouldn't be to hard to find.
