Popped into Halfords today to but one. Found the cup which fits on the filter but noticed the centre connection for the wrench was a circle. The packaging stated I needed to get another part to connect to the cup so I can use a wrench. Does anyone have one of these removal tools and can tell me if this is deff needed as naturally they didn't have the other part.

Is this for your leon, If so i'd say you don't need one!

Managed to do mine by hand everytime, theres enough room to get a grip with both hands and apply as much grip as a wench imo. ;)

Cup wrench should look like this with a square hole in the center for a socket set extension bar.

Mine has a ¾ square socket hole and I had to buy a ½ to ¾ adapter as well.

You can get away without one of these if you have a tin-can cartridge filter, use a strap or chain wrench, or just a screwdriver through it if it's stiff, although there's no going back once you do that. Preferably, don't screw the new one on too tightly, lubricate the o-ring with a little engine oil and tighten by hand, then run and check for any leaks - there should be none.

My TDI has a paper filter with a plastic cap on the filter holder, and a cup wrench is the only safe way to undo it.

I had a scratch the head moment with the same laser tool.

The filter remover is held on to the cardboard it comes on with a metal ring that attaches to the centre hole of the remover. When you remove the cardboard the metal ring remains and actually looks like it's meant to be there.

Take a punch or screwdriver and hammer to it and pop the ring through and you'll be left with the square hole, which a standard wrench will fit onto.

That's my payback since I used the service guides on here last weekend and it saved me a few headaches"
