LCR Heater - Not working!

Hi all,

My Cupra R heater has never got hot since I bought the car.

When climate control is set to hot (displayed as Hi on screen), it blows normal temperature air - like from outside.
If I'm lucky, sometimes it will give the slightest bit of warmth (I mean just noticeable) - but it is not useful / good enough.
Something is wrong and as the cooler temps come in this time of year, I'm looking to get this fixed ASAP.

Some history…
  1. My car loses coolant very slowly. It will take 3-4 weeks for the header tank to go from max to min (measured when the car is fully cooled overnight).
  2. I recently had cam belt service at VAGTech and I let them know about the issue and asked if they could diagnose it. They said they would do a coolant flush and pressure test as part of the job... When I picked the car up, they reported everything was fine but problem continues. As the car didn't go in for this specific problem it would be inappropriate to query with them why it is still an issue.

I've searched the forum but I couldn't find much about this issue.

  • Can anyone suggest any troubleshooting steps?
  • Heater matrix could be blocked up? - Would this be causing the slight leak (built up pressure around matrix)?

i would try to find out why you are losing coolant first. Did you get the water pump changed when the cam belt was done? has the coolant system been properly bleed?

The water pump was changed, along with all pulleys, tensioners, bolts etc all with genuine VAG parts from TPS.

As VAGTech are specialists, I assume the coolant system was changed and bled properly.

The car was loosing coolant before the cam belt change was done.

are the hoses going to and from the heating matrix getting hot?

If these are the ones you talk about, then they are both hot but the left one is hotter.

Hi it could be the heater resistor there should be a guide to replacing the blower resistor pack on the forum .can get them on ebay about £10. Had it on a bmw just blows cold air all time .

The Heater resistor just controls the fan speed not the heat. Sounds like either the matrix is blocked or the motor that controls the flow of the hit water going through the matrix has packed up so no hot water is going through the Hester matrix.

Thanks - sounds like a good possibility however I have not seen / heard of that specific part before. Do you have the name for it? Maybe a part number?

If the matrix was blocked, would both pipes be hot or just one?

IMO i dont think it's a blockage as the return pipe is getting hot, but i could be wrong on that.
there is another thread on here with similar symptoms and the fix was the temp control motor. it wont let me post the link but the threads called
"Heater blowing cold air 99% of the time"

It could be the temp control motor. They regularly stopped working on mk4 fiesta's and the unit was under skuttle panel. Not sure where they are on the Leon's though.
