Has anyone followed this guide for the Leon Cupra?

http://website.lineone.net/~alan.james.lorely/fan mod/Repair.html

I've just ordered the resistors and cut out a plate yesterday but need to know if the mounting holes will be correct without having to pull my car apart at home, put it back together, then drill them, then take it apart again ;)

Was lucky enough to find a piece of alu the right size in a pile of scrap bits under the bench :D

I'm trying to fully understand this electric fan problem before I go talk to my SEAT dealer.

-There's two fans.
-They have to modes, slow and fast.
-In slow mode, how many fans are supposed to work? One?
-In fast mode, they're both working.
-When aircon is turned on and the engine is at normal working temperature, the fan(s) are supposed to work in the slow mode.

The fans are operated by a electric circuit. It's these electric components (resistors) which fails/are broken when the fans operate only in fast mode.

This is an electric fault, not a mechanical.

What have I got right, what have I got wrong?

Thanks.

Both fans run in the slow speed and fast speed modes. And yes, usually a resistor failure, the fan and motors are OK and get junked for the sake or a poor resistor as they are not designed for repair.

The test for failure is straightforward.

From cold start switch off the A/C - fans should not run
Switch on the A/C , both fans run at slow speed
Switch A/c off again and they should stop

Cynical of VW to never have engineered a better solution as this problem has been around for ages on a number of models. Selling the spares is good money I guess.

Adrian.

I wouldn't waste your time speaking to Seat about it, neither they or VW recognise the fault.
Best off with the nime controller anfd hope you don't get the ABS fault, unless this has been fixed

Low speed Fan

Car has gone into Seat dealer and reported this to be a problem, although i'm damned if I notice. They did tell me on the phone that this is a common problem.

The thing that got me is that they reckon the work will be £580!! this surely can't be right!

anyway i can simply tell if its an electrical fix i can do myself or whether it needs doing?

cheers

I had the problem of no low-speed fans; only intermittent high speed on both iirc.

I took the car to the Seat dealership in the spring and they managed to fix the problem by replacing one small connector in the fan control module, but tonight, after months of being 100% fine, both fans gave up completely resulting in overheating.

Does the Nime controller control both fans, high and low speed, or is it only suitable for the intermittent high speed fan fix?

Thanks :)

The nime only gives you the slow speed fan control back.
your ones are totally fecked

Ok thanks. I had an idea it was going to be worse this time.

I checked all the fuses just in case but, as you say, it looks like theyre buggered.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Bump time..

AAAAAHHH

So finally after 4 months of it sitting there in the workshop, my Nime kit was fitted today. It took around 2 weeks to get the thing working on the bench having a look at it here and there as I messed up the wiring on the PWM itself..
Anyway took my 3 cold painful hours to fit the bloody thing as a few bolts in I hit one which had to be drilled out and turned into a nightmare. Anyway, all fitted, didn;t make any difference. Started the car and I had the VERY LOUD HIGH SPEED FAN noise *sigh* after a minute it died down again (as usual) but I noticed something.. they were at low speed.
Then it occured to me.. had I ever checked they were running at low speed or just assumed because of the intermittent high speed issue? So out came the fuse to disable the Nime box and I still had low speed fans. So after putting it all back together in the rain i'm no better off.

So what on earth is going on?

Obviously this was a complete waste of time and money as I didn't check all aspects of diagnosing the fault!

To summarize:

When I start the car the fans both operate at HIGH speed making the car sound like rubbish as it struggles with the load on a cold engine.
Once the fans calm down (about a minute in) the return to low speed.
The fans will occasionally come back on at HIGH speed (or at least they did when I had the air con switched on to test it)

I don't mind them running at HIGH once i'm driving if it needs to but the HIGH speed at start up sounds awful.

Noticed this fella had a similar problem: http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=99016&highlight=fan

Would be nice to sort this finally, next on the list is the random low-boost-until-you-restart shenanigans.

It might be possible that you have a similar problem to mine.

Mine began with the high speed fans on startup (without aircon on), then a couple of weeks later, it got the high speed only problem. I took it to Seat and they cleaned the fan relay box (these can get moist inside) and although they said it was a temporary fix, it did work for a few months.

All of a sudden, all fan speeds went and the car would overheat almost constantly, so it went into the garage and I was told it needed new fans.

One set of new fans later and the problem is still there, so we kept them in, (and also grabbed the old fans in case I wanted to do some testing), and sent the car back to the garage. Next the thermostat was replaced (which is what I think caused the problem in the first place) but the damage it had caused during overheating meant the water pump was broken.

So, one new set of fans (not needed), a thermostat, water pump, cam belt, and cam belt tensioner later, the car is working again (now it sometimes underheats ).

To conclude, I would recommend checking your thermostat is definitely working, and that the relay box is clean and dry inside before the high speed fan problem blows a circuit and the car overheats.

PS I have a spare set of used fans which are working fine AFAIK, if anyone is interested in trying to diagnose a problem.

Cheers for that, i'll get on it. Mine has been doing this since I bought it a year ago  Really don't want the fans to go..
Thermostat does make sense :)

Just had my low speed fans fixed with the external resistor kit too.

I had a problem with it though...in that the glass fuses it came with blew/went cloudy every time they were put in. Local specialist said the fuses it came with were too small. Anyone know what size fuse it should be on?

Also just to clarify something (paranoia setting in)...the slow speed fans only come on when AC is on right? After a drive I noticed fans were not on. Turned on AC and the fans came on. Turned it off and they turned off. Is this normal or are they supposed to run on low speed constantly?

cheers
