I replaced the main fan a few weeks ago. It's a bit awkward to get at the fixings but took less than an hour to get the old one out and the new one in. Trick to it is to unbolt the fan from the bracket and then unbolt the bracket and wiggle the fan out.

Part number for the new fan is:
1J0959455F

Got mine for £40 2nd hand.

A

Nice one, will have a go at changing my fan assembly soon. How much are the fans to buy new?

Does this issue show up as a fault in VAG-COM?

Just to confirm, as I've read these topics before and thought mine was normal!

Basically with air con on, my fans spin up for a few seconds, make loads of noise then stop again. Then a few seconds later it will do the same, mainly when I'm stopped in traffic, but I may just not be able to hear it when driving. Not tried it with air con off as I leave it on auto all the time. Does this mean the fans are shot?

mine do this too when stationary i too thought this was normal - what is supposed to happen as its done this since i bought her nearly a year ago !?

it´s definitly not easy to do, for a person who don´t do this often... it´s really tricky to get the fans out...

on a LCR i would take them out from under the car, on a TDI i would take them out at the top...

Oh **** traps.

Mine does the say thing. I assumed it was normal until just now! :(

I was going to post a thread on this actually.

When the fan kicks in and the lights dim slightly, if I also have my headlights on (air con on obviously) the window switch control lights start flashing on and off manically, until the fan shuts off again. However, if I boost the revs to over 1k the flashing spasticated lights stop.

I'm assuming that that's the battery not able to cope or something...

I'm sensing a group buy for fan assemblies...

Seriously though, this should be a recall item, as it's obviously a known fault.

Maybe a good idea.

What are the implications of leaving the car in this state indefinitely?

From reading threads on here and other VAG sites it seems that over time the fast fan fuse will blow, leaving no cooling at all. Other reports of the air-con compressor overheating and dying due to inadequate cooling.

VAG don't even replace the fans with an uprated part either, so even if I was prepared to pay £350 to have them fixed they'll probably go again at some point. New fans do come with a 24 month warranty, but they're likely to take longer than that to fail again. My slow fan control has just failed after 4 years, 43K miles.

Very very poor. Shold be an unlimited warranty part.

the fuse on top of the battery will keep blowing from time to time.. and at worse can melt the entire fuse block if u have your aircon on all the time.. i beleive it can also knacker your aircon pump as it is no being cooled sufficiently..mine fans have been like it a while..but ive not been using my aircon at all tho... i feel i mite need it as the winter months approach to clear the windows so goona get it fixed asap

jus hada quote from Tristan at Ted Johnson on here for the fans

"one fan is £111.38 less 10% +VAT and the other is £116.47 less 10% +VAT i don't have them in but i can get them in for about 2 days"

Jeezass :(

I don't use the aircon very much though, even in the summer (I like the feeling of cruising around with the wind blowing) so I guess that's a blessing. Is the fan required when cruising on the motorway or is the air flow enough at 70 odd mph?

i wouldnt like to say really.. im guessing its ok when your cruising.. but u cant really tell if the fans kicking in or not..but wouldnt like to say for sure

ive seen on a website there is another way of fixing it by. fiting external resistors to the fans.. which invovles fitting a peice of aluminium as a heat sink and wiring 2 huge restistors into the external wires.. not something id like to try tho lol

~£400 fitted seems to be the general concensus on price. Outrageous.

Find a breakers yard...do all VAG models with climate control have the same fans and assembly? Be plenty of them around. Get an independent to fit 'em.

i was qouted £342 fitted from a seat dealer.. have thought about going to a scrappy i would say there all the same as long as they got climate control.. but you couldnt be sure if the fans were ok..or if they were how long for as they dont seem to last very long mines an 03 done 35k.. its disgusting really that VAG havent done anything about it

Sounds like it would be worth trying for a group buy as there seems to be plenty of cases of this. If we can all get it cheaper then this has got to be a good thing
I'd be up for a group buy but need this sooner rather than later
If someone is making up a list then put me down

yea thats the site ive seen before!.. just read it again.. now i wasnt keen on the external resistor fix but it seems someone has now come up with a better solution

http://www.nime.co.uk/fancontrollerinstall.html

this seems like a good fix...looks fairly easy and damm site cheaper.. and hopefully more permanant than even if you replace the fans coz they dont seem to last long!

im guessin it would also fit the leons?..im considering doin this instead lookin at at!

Okay getting very scared about this.
I strongly suggest if you haven't read the link on PlatinumR's post you should do.
Also muttly link is the one I'm going for
This is a long standing thing and if you car is still under wattanty get armed with information and go see Seat.

I had my fans replaced two months ago under warranty, I went armed with print outs from this and a few other sites. They said they had never heard of the fans being a problem!

However, when I turned up with so much information there was no argument, they were replaced and I have had no problems since (well not with the fans anyway).

Thats good to hear that these forums help fight our fight with the Stealers
