Leon 2.0 TDi FR

first of all hello to one and all
yesterday i went to my dealer and ordered the above
then i discovered this forum and o boy did i have a sleepless night :cry:
please please if it was you which model would you choose

1, FR 2.0 TDi 170bhp
or
2, FR 2.0 TSi and this one will be either DSG or manual

i would really appricate your opinions

I chose a diesel, cos it is plenty quick and economical , if I didn`t care about fuel costs I would have a Cupra ...

Depends on how many miles you are doing and if you want an auto or not.

Personally if i could afford a tfsi with dsg, then i could afford a cupra, so the cupra would win.

However, because i do silly miles a year a diesel is required, so i'm limited to the TDI, although if it had dsg option, i would probably have gone with the dsg too :)

i am just worried because this will be my first seat and i want to make the right decision because i will be keeping the car for a considerable time
i have read about the DPF on the forum and cannot mke up my mind so all i am asking for is opinions on which one to choose

I've only driven the tdi fr but I've got to say that it's plenty quick enough once you get used to the way a diesel drives.

As for the DPF concerns I've had the DPF light come on a few times, usually when I've been taking it easy going to and coming home from work. A quick run up the motorway for 10 mins or so clears the DPF with no problems and (touch wood) I've had no bother with the car at all so far.

i ordered the leon 2.0 TDi FR on saturday
when i came back home i fount this forum and read about the DPF
now i am unsure wheither to have the petrol or diesel because like i said i will be keeping the car for some time and can not make up my mind i just wanted to see what people would do if they were buying it new

well if it's any help to you mate I worried about the same thing before going ahead and ordering my FR.

To be honest I haven't found anything to worry about. The DPF filter cleans itself with a quick trip up the motorway. The manual explains about cleaning the DPF - basically you've got to drive at more than 60 kph for 5 to 10 minutes so that the filter can burn off the soot. If you're doing stop start driving (rush hour) the soot doesn't burn off and is collected in the filter.

When the light comes on, take it for a spin and it will clear itself.

I certainly wouldn't let it put me off buying the car though mate.

I would go for the FR TDI. Its got plenty of grunt and torque as well as being fairly economical. Just depends on how many miles you do a year really. I do about 20-30K a year so its more economical for me to have a Derv.

I test drive both and originally ordered the FR TFSI..... Ahfer 2 sleepless nights worrying about the extra costs (what with doing +23k miles each year), went back to dealers, cancelled the petrol and went for the FR170, mainly because of the economics.

Note that I drove the TFSI at the free Seat track day last year and found that whilst the petrol felt quicker at the high end of gears, my TDi felt alot quicker off the mark (though thats only my opinion).

I have always rubished diesel cars of old, but to my amazement I have no regrets, its stacks of fun and no issues with DPF at 8k on the clock. Give it some beans as they say here!

I don't think you'll be disappointed mansell. I got my FR TDI in November, already done 4k miles and I've averaged about 40mpg. It's my first diesel car and, as someone mentioned, the performance is excellent when you adjust your driving style to suit the diesel. I'm quite sure the petrol is quicker overall but I don't think there's much in it for normal every-day driving. I've always been conscious of the DPF issue but it's never cropped up for me. I rarely do any stop/start city driving so maybe that's why. I just use the DPF issues as an excuse to drive "enthusiastically" at every opportunity! :p

you wont save that much on fuel if you drive it properly. late 20's is poss but average 30's is norm for most

If you mean a TDI FR doing late 20's or 30's you can hardly call that driving 'properly' more like driving like a complete spanner :p

Mansell, i had a 2.5l Mazda and used to get 23-27MPG and since i got my TDI FR in December i have averaged 40MPG, 45+ on long (100mile+) trips... Yes you can drive like a complete looney and get lower MPG but you would have to have your foot to the floor almost all the time...

I was in exactly the same boat as you, except i discovered this forum the day after i picked up my FR TDI, and when i started reading about DPF etc i thought great ive made a HUGE mistake.... but 2,500 miles on and no lights, no trouble and loving every minute of it!

If you read the DPF thread from start to finish you will realise that most people with problem have had them pretty much from the start and for no real reason or driving style, and most (but not all i know) seem to clear with a quick burst anyway...

Im a Turbo Diesel convert, i love the Torque, i love the quick burst of speed, but most of all i love that i can drive like a complete nutter and still not have fill up every week like i did with my Mazda :p or because i work nights i can drive to and from work normally and get 40+MPG easily :clap:

Enjoy your new car and enjoy the site, there are a lot of guys who know an awful lot on here (dont ask me i know diddly) and they are all eager to share their knowloedge (fortunately for me)

140 Dsg

Something to consider.......

Drove my Dad's Stylance DSG with Sports pack on Saturday & was amazed how quick it was off the mark!!! (Launch control helps)

Dread to think what a remap would do to it.....and there's no DPF to worry about.

Still prefer driving my FR TDI but there's not much in it.

Read on here that FR is getting DSG option - now that is gonna be a seriously quick motor!!!!

What are your thoughts on 140 DSG compared to the FR TDI??

(I know its slightly off topic for this thread)

Could not believe how quick the 140 was.

Anybody driven a remapped 140 DSG??

there both great cars

only thing you do notice is a small amount of turbo lag going from the 140 to the 170

I had a New MK5 Golf GT 140 REMAPPED TO 190HP and 300 pounds torque and now have a Leon Sport 140 DSG and the Leon feels just as quick when accelerating as there is no interruption just a seamless push I would never go back to a manual road car after having This DSG.

On a 80 mile drive yesterday I averaged 52 mpg this is using Millers Power sport 4 though normally I would get 47 on the same run but only just tried this Millers additive and it really does work.
