Leon CD Changer Fitting

I've asked this in 'Accessories Wanted' (because I want one ) but it seems more relevant to ask (more people) here.

Now, I've done a search, but can't come to any proper conclusion, so could someone please answer this for me.

I want to add a CD changer to my 55 plate Leon FR Mk1. I was under the impression that if I bought a second hand one with brackets and leads I could plonk it straight in, but I have heard talk of needing a different 'liner' to house it in.

Is what's there now a dummy that needs to be replaced with a new liner to install it? I've never looked at it, but I thought the fittings were there and with the right brackets it would go straight in?

If so, all the changer/lead only ones on eBay aren't much good if I need to source another bit, or will it fit into what's already there?

Pull off surround, undo two screws remove liner attach cable, push in changer do up two screws, push on surround! Jobs a good'en! Remove Headunit attach other end of cable you fed through while changer was out, push headunit back! All done! Dont forget radio code!!!

It makes me laugh, reading this, that my dealer wanted a three figure sum for labour to install one of these, bringing the total to £400 odd!

Thanks for all the input, glad I don't need to source anything but the lead, changer and fittings.

Easy writing down the install instructions - took me an hour and a lot of skin to get the cable in behind the glovebox

Then I stood back and thought about it - a bit of garden twine was used to pull the cable through - 5 min job.

Hope this saves your skin

OK, I've changed my mind. I want to get an MP3 CD changer.

Like one of these (most likely the Alpine one, the CHA-S634):

For the moment, I want to add it to the normal Aura head unit and shove it in the glovebox, with a view to maybe upgrading the HU in the future. But I'm guessing the dimensions aren't necessarily identical? Has someone done such an install or knows the dimensions of the Seat/VW one or might I be looking at a boot install if it's bigger?

Also, any idea whether a 55 plate FR TDi will have the wiring ready and waiting?

you will probably only be able to use the SEAT cd-changer on the SEAT HU. You'll need a compatible headunit for a different changer.

No, they can work, those kits come with an adaptor thing. But it's the physical size difference and fitting that I'm unsure about. And if I go to my local ICE shop I know he'll talk me into a full twin sub boot install and bankrupt me before I can say 'standard head unit will do me for now thanks'.

Thinking about it since though, I can't think how you'd control the MP3 functions of it, as they require a lot of menu fiddling to cycle through so many songs and folders. I suppose it'd be better to upgrade to an MP3 head unit as well.

Where can you get those fascia adaptors?

Here's my dealer's costs for a changer:

Cd Changer - £270
Wiring Loom - £45
Bracket - £20
Fitting Cost / Labour - £75

Total - £410

Or if I source myself:

Changer: about £100
Wiring Loom: about £20
Bracket: hopefully might come with the changer
Labour: £0

Total: £120, albeit not brand new.

OK, here's another question: if I put in a Seat changer now, what aftermarket head units will it be compatible with in the future? I understand Sony, Alpine and Grundig changers can be made to fit to a Seat HU, but how about the other way round?
