Hi,

I know this has been mentioned a few times but would be interested to know how noisey you find your Leon FRs I have a FR TDI 57 plate, changed tyres to Goodyear Eagle Asy and car is bit quieter but still louder than i would expect. Car has only done 14k, are there any other well known problems ie with the standard 17" alloys or wheel bearings etc?

Depends what car you came from..

Seat have saved money by not fitting as much sound-deadening material as they would in say an Audi / VW + with the 17/18's there a big wide tyre, so it does generate a bit of noise, see if you can get a ride in another one, or see if the dealer has another one to compare against.

Mine makes a rumbling noise but it turns out one of the wheel bearings is going.. Got to drop it into the garage this week and confirm it is the wheel bearing and get them to sort it.

Thats on a 07 plate car with 15k miles on it!

Hi, very interesting to read about FR road noise... here's my story.

Have an FRT TDI on 07 plate, was delivered from new with Bridgestone Potenza tyres. Clocked up 12,000 miles about 2 months ago and started to notice a rumbling/droning noise in the cabin.

It got worse and worse so I called in to a local Seat dealer who drove it down the road and immediately said it was the tyres. He looked at them and noticed "feathering" which was explained to me as uneven wear on the inside rim of the tyres causing the noise.

Cutting a long story short, eventually persuaded the lease company to replace all 4 tyres despite the fact that the rears still looked pretty new. (Replaced again with Bridgestone Potenza) - Noise immeditaly went away, and I got the alignment done too, apparently it was slightly out.

However, I don't know if it's just me being very noise-sensitive now, but I have started to notice a similar noise again, but only on some surfaces. For example, we have speed bumps on our local A-road and the droning tyre noise is awful on the road but silent when going on the speed ramps themselves which are made of a smoother tarmac.

Kwik-Fit chap said that Potenzas are very noisy tyres. Anyone else have these ones?

The road noise on the 17s and 18s is quite noticable compared to other cars. I came from a Citroen C3 (I know!!) to my FR TDi on 18s. I test drove about 5 different FRs before I bought it; three on 17s and two on 18s - the latter being noiser but all of them a lot noisier than the Citreon. Having said that I've just (at 25,000) replaced the fronts with Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric's also and it has helped substantially. Will definately be changing the rears to the same when the start to get low.

road noise

hi,
road noise is only one of many reasons i changed my 07 leon fr tdi to skoda octy vrs tdi. Had 18s with pirelli p zeros terrible road noise, hardest ride that just got too much in the end, and coarse noisey engine under acceleration. Now the ride in skoda is lot smoother, quieter and dare i say acceleration is smoother and quieter, may be a concious thing but seems quicker considering its the same engine. Do still like look of leon but sadley just could not live with it.:)

There are MANY threads regarding rear wheel wear, bearings etc, most are due to miss alignment of the rear sub frame and as such is a warranty claim [ you may get a % back for tyre wear etc.] had our done rears were like 50p's

tbh there's probably nothing wrong with your car as such. i've had my 58 plate fr tdi for a few weeks now, it's on 18's. the overall noise (road noise, engine noise) is a fair bit worse than my mk1 fr tdi was, disappointing and might make me change the mk2 after a year or so depending on the pennies. i was expecting a degree of noise especially going for the 18's but maybe not quite as much as i've got!

as for the ride harshness, don't get me started
