Repairing an accident damaged Leon - it has a hole the size of a 10p piece in the "clutch bellhousing " & an oil leak & minor damage to the the oval VW badge/plate thing y.. still dripping 3 weeks on so im guessing theres oil in it.. its done 50k,, so far i have replaced all the damaged bits & got my Audi S3 alloys fitted:p just needing an FR bumper now ...plus a few gears of course

Even with cables removed it still wont select reverse & is real stiff into the other 2 i can get..

I know i will probably have to strip it out but thought id check here beforehand - Gary from Fenland breakers told me to bleed the clutch .. done, but no different...

Any clue anyone ?

my guess is the housing is bashed in,dented even by a small amount and the moving parts inside the gearbox is rubbing against the housing,or part of the broken pieces are still inside the box making movent hard for some items thats moving

It hasnt touched the box,. just what appears to be the clutch housing.... the box bolts onto the back of it.. probably is chunks of metal in there somwhere though !! will find out monday / tuesday

Have taken box out - the problems nothin to do wth the clutch or metal in bellhousing. The selector is OK but its shaft is a very tight fit at its base point , this corresponds to to where a light scrape is on the base of the box casing - no doubt this bit which is the "oval vw logo'd plate " is whereabouts the problem lies.. rather than bodge it, its at a friends friend who's a gearbox man so we will see..

I'lll check back tomorrow & update myself..

The gbox man said he "freed up the issues inside", all gears are now present & that the damaged base plate had caused the problem.. eighty quid labour , the base plate has been left loose..

The plate ( the oval vw logo'd thing in the mid right of the pic at the beginneing of this thread ) is "bent or damaged inside" so tightening it up makes the selector stiff again.. - ordered it today from my nearest stealer, Seat Watford.. only a tenner.. plus a bit of semi synth comma oil to get tomorrow @a tenner.. & should be 100 all in ..

Hopefully fitting the plate will be end of the problem.. it was hardly damaged though.....wierd.....!.

Wicked - i tried the new plate last nite & as soon as you tighten the plate up the shaft locks up !! 2mm spacer helps alot but dont cure it.. the selector shaft is 16mm & the "hole in the plate" it sits in 16.25 so i plan to bore out recieving "hole" & re-establish the .25mm play.. (using the word re-establish makes it sound less like a bodge..)
Any other ideas Silver ? PS the main gbox casing looks totally undamaged / bent

out there over the edge vw tech
i your pic you have 2 more bolts behind the plate with vw logo on are they damaged at all because they hold all the linkages in side of the box in line (do not remove or all hell will happen) only other thing is if selector shaft is bent
